So far I'm on day 7 and I'm determined to do really well at this game. What would be good to start with. Raising islands, what crops, what buildings to buy etc.
And Ideally I would like to marry Vaughn, I gave him chocolate on his birthday.
I've played HMDS cute before and completed that but took me a while so any advice or what you did would help.

Crops what I did was start with LOTS of Turnips for quick cash. Plus I don't think Potatoes are that profitable either. Oh and don't forget to buy Chen's Red & Blue wonderful + a 3-slot watering can.
Islands, for money... I'd put Volcano > Mushroom > Animal as a priority. But I went with the "more sun stones" path, so I can't remember which order I raised them.
As for buildings, a chicken coop would be best, though a kitchen wouldn't hurt either, which is what I did.
Oh and USE THOSE HARVEST SPRITES.

Befriend the Harvest Sprites as soon as possible, that way you can get more so you can use them more often; once you get the full team, you can stop gift giving them. Also ship everything, including weeds and make sure you win the crop festival as many times as possible.

If you want Vaughn, Mushroom Island first so you have mushroom clusters to give him. Milk next. Porridge is his fave. Then Volcano Island, get gelatin for other villager gifts, stuff to sell, adamantite for makers, try to get to 25 for Orichalm for trinkets.

In the meantime grow crops, crops, crops for gold. Forage everything you can pick up and ship. Fish as much as you can. Once you get a kitchen and make your own food, you can stay up til 5:45am.

grow lots of crops because thats what makes you a lot of money. i suggest that you build a barn as soon as you can if you are planning to court vaughn because cows make milk and milk is a 500 point gift to him. o and fish alot during festivals and events

I never use the sprites...not sure why not. I just never have.
I'm also not a huge fan of growing tons of crops. Usually I get all the animals I possibly can and make money off of them and plant maybe three patches of each of that season's crops. Combined with foraging, I always have enough money to do whatever I want.
I also HATE mining. I only do it to get Regis and Lily's sunstones. Once you befriend the mice you don't have to do that anymore.

I mean, if you want to play the game the textbook way, you shouldn't play it like I do haha but I think my way is less stressful and I can focus on my social life xD

Don't waste any time on befriending the villagers! You'll need their affection to actually complete the main plot, so try to make room to at least say hi to all of them once a day. c:

dont give vaughn chocolate again. im not sure he digs that too much. i gave him animal feed until i could give him porage. other than that, raise certain islands as soon as you can
-mushroom island
-volcano island
-rice and tree island
those help you get money faster. animal island and green house island dont get you any money (the green house costs way to much for a beginner to get) other than that, i always start w/ chickens cuz theyre easy to take care of and eggs sell decently

Vaughn likes chocolate as much as animal feed, just chocolate cost 100g whilst chicken or pet food is only 10g.
Both cause a to appear when you give them to him, it counts as one of the 5 gift sunstones as well.

Chocolate is good.

I suggest before rice & tree islands, get Mystics, they unlock HG, WP, Witchkins, Nathan & Alisa, plus the spring(fish)! After those, get Animal Island, leave Greenhouse Island for last!

Mystic has about 8 sunstones you can get so you can unlock another island faster. Animal is good also, one of the only sources for certain items (twin herb, fire-something flower). Just put out cheap/free items to get the animals hearts up and work for you. Small fish for ducks/badgers. Mushroom clusters for mice/monkeys. Mushrooms for rabbits/badgers. (My sparrows are never used). They may bring you some high-priced items to ship and other useful items (eg. S-level ores to win Mining Contest, large fish for Fishing Contest)
