As they moved along, they eventually started allowing you to be a female in them game and get married starting with Harvest Moon For Girl on the PSX. They also had a female in the 1st to 3rd games on the GBC, but you couldn't really get married, except in 3 to your partner on the farm. Harvest Moon for Girl was only released in Japan, though. After that, they slowly started adding the ability to play as a female, and now they always allow you to choose, it seems. There is still usually more emphasis for male players, though, even now.
Yes, it's quite upsetting but at least the bachelors are quite more now... (in ToTT to be exact) than before. (HMDSC was a big disappointed for me. And the RF series.:/)

I don't think girls get the short end of the stick either. Most games have an even amount. There is only a select few where other games have more. And at least, girls are not teased with a boy that they can see heart events for, but can't marry, like Alisa in SI.

Personally though, when it comes to DS and DSC I think the girls have more marriage options. That doesn't seem right, however, I take off the Mineral Town girls from the list for a reason. The reason I do this is because you marry them, and then your game ends. And that is it. Whereas, any other girl you marry, be it a Valley girl or a special girl, your game continues. So, for me, I say that is only nine options.

If you choose to go after a Mineral Town girl, I recommend choosing another girl as a backup.

Whereas girl players don't have this problem when it comes to Cute. You not only have just of the Valley guys and Skye, but also the Mineral Town guys. And unlike in DS, marrying the Mineral Town guys does not end the game. So, if you have a copy of FoMT or MFoMT, girls have a choice of 11 guys they can marry, and not worrying about their game ending.

And unlike with DS, I don't recommend a backup if you already know who you are going for. Because since none of them ends your game, there is no reason for one.

Now technically, I know that DS has more choices than DSC. However, considering five of those choices end your game in DS, which I really don't like when that happens, I just remove them from my list of options.

^I agree with the girls not having the short end of the stick but I don't agree with some of the other things you said.

So what if Alisa had Friendship (heart) Events? Why is that a bad thing. You couldn't marry her either way, would it have been so much better if they didn't include those? It's not like there weren't already seven other choices. Plus that only happened one single time and now she is marriageable in a different game. It doesn't seem like something worth complaining about.

I know that in the English version there are some glitches that make it impossible to marry the HG and the Witch Princess but that is not on purpose. They are still marriage candidates and it was just a mistake that you couldn't marry them. The set marriage candidates in DS and DS Cute only are larger in the boy version. It's only if you can add FoMT/MFoMT that it changes. But that is an addition.

Not everyone has both games so you can cross the Mineral Town guys off the list for plenty of people too. And if you go by that logic with the Mineral Town girls in Harvest Moon: Boy & Girl there are zero choices for the girl players. Because the game ends after you get married to anyone. While the boy side continues on after marriage. So I don't think you should not consider them marriage candidates because the game ends. You can still marry them.

But at least there's a good plot. -_- I married Rick in mine and regretted it. LOL

I married him too. I read a description of his last event and thought it would be cool, wrong XD.

But I sold all my chickens went to bed and still got the scene D:. Are you blind Rick? What chickens?! I had no choice but to reject him so I could move on and woo Kai. Never even finished that. I should do that sometime.

Man I loved that game. I didn't care if the game ended after marriage. I don't care about that in HM: DS either though XD.

We are the same LOL but I chose Rick instead of Kai since I badly want to get married. -_- *le sigh* Doctor broke my heart when he married Elli. :( Then Gray.... (I never wooed them, I only talked to them and made them reach orange heart....) HM BTN For Boy and Girl was my first HM game, mind you.

I did not know that. But now I do :P. It's a really good one. I'm so happy I have it.

That Elli rubbing her date in my face >:(. Yeah well the year later I had a date. I wish it had been doctor so I could laugh at her.... But it was Cliff. He's cool too though :/. Seriously though Elli bothered me in that game. It's like every single thing she did was only to impress Doctor nameless Susan.

Sorry if if I came off the wrong way. Let me rephrase some things.

The reason I brought up Alisa is because I don't think it's fair that they give you heart events with her, and yet you can't marry her. I'm not saying it would make the game better without these scenes. I like them because you get to know her better. My complaint, however, is that since you were given heart events with her, you should be allowed to marry her. That's why I refer to it as a tease.

While true that not everyone has both games, in that light you can still take those characters out. The only exception comes in DSC, where Kai will come in the summer, regardless if you have FoMT or MFoMT. Now, I do admit that would mean there are more girls. However, I feel marrying Skye is easy, when compared to most of the Special Girls in DS. I find Leia to be the easiest in DS because the only added thing you need is a duck pond.

I know what you mean, about HM B&G. In fact, I really don't like that aspect. Even though, some of the endings at least imply why the game would end, like Rick, Doctor and Kai. However, I do find something weird about that. This is up until MFoMT.

In any game before then, if a girl farmer gets married, their game ends no matter what. This goes for the girl version of Back to Nature, and Harvest Moon 3 for the GBC. However, what I find really strange is that when DS came around, there are five girls, if you can connect, that you can marry but your game ends. Yet as a girl farmer, there is no restriction when it comes to an ended game.
