It'd be even cooler when your own character dies, you could play the character of his son/daughter. And you could keep on playing it. That'd be awesome.

There is something what annoyed me about the hero's death. I mean, why the old people like Galen, Romana, Casey and Patrick or even Carter were able to live longer than YOU? I don't get it. Galen was like 80 years old. Romana and the Twins were around this age too. I'm not sure what happened to the hero. Maybe he had a heart attack and that why he died faster? I can't believe he died because of old age.
That's exactly what i was thinking, too. It is kinda odd how the people older than you live longer than you. D'think the guys who made this game thought it through
properly?!
They probably didn't have the funds to spend development time making more or new characters to replace dying characters every chapter. The village is already pretty empty, and making more characters can take considerable time when you factor in models, animations, programming, having them interact with other villagers, events, not creating overlapping characters, designing them well, writing dialogue, translation and localization, etc.

I kept on speeding through the chapters so that my son would get older because I REALLY thought that you could play as your son and your son's son.
After which, around the Fourth chapter, I think, I found out you can't. Then I kept on fretting about how old my character looks...

That's just so sad. When I read all the posts in this topic,my heart felt heavy. (I can't understand that feeling but I usually feel it when I'm very sad). In other harvest moon games, you're immortal. (Ahem) I think I want to play it some time.

In the special adition of AWL you can play forever. Your character dies and goes to heaven, which looks exactly like your farm and your village. You meet all villagers there + your family (son and wife).
Heaven

I've never gotten that far in those games, but I still find it sad that you die.
My theory for how all the old people who are old when you start the game out living you is that after Nina dies, they all get together and drink/eat something that makes them immortal, as to why they don't share with the rest of town, who knows... =/

My first HM game was Another Wonderful Life and I was like... 7 or 8. And I was SO excited when it was almost the end of the last chapter that I saved at the VERY last hour of my life so I could show my cousins and my grandma when I visited them in PA. I was so certian that I could play my son and then started crying at the end. I mean I was crying HARD! Like I was punched in the stomach or something... And I couldn't really enjoy the file afterwards since I had only an hour to play. Ugh! Ever since then I hated that game SO much! I tried playing it again and just gave up. I even wrote a letter to Natsume telling them how angry I was with them but I never sent it. I mean that really made me MAD especially since I was and emotional and sensitive girl back then! But that game scarred me for life and even just writing this brings back that terrible feeling! I think... I'm gonna go cry in my pillow now...

It made it even worse when all those old people were at my funeral! THEY should be the ones in the casket!

Well I, for one think that AWL is one of the most realistic form of harvest moon. I would like to play it sometime. It shows the realities of life. That everyone has their 'times'.
