funny how chance works in this game, I played the game into about summer-ish to get familiar with the game's feel after having not played HM games in a while and to finally decide who I wanted to court so I erased the old save file and started up a new one. I did not even know gold existed by diving
Day 1: found a gold on 2nd item or so => go to raul to check how much approximately reaction: OMFG!!
Day 2: was chanting sea urchin, tin can and i get another gold O_O

I know you have a 10% chance of getting an item when you jump in, but so far the items seem to fall in a distinct range.
Usually i'll get a tin can or a branch, most often, then less often than that i get an ore stone or a sea urchin, or a straight tea. Least often i get is a gold.
There does seem to be one thing however. I usually cut logs from the river immediately into lumber. I find often on the last bit of energy in the meter, when i jump, i get branches more often. Unless of course i need them. If i don't have a stack of higher-quality branches on hand, i find i get the cans most often.
Considering i have the same problem with chen and Lloyd's shops, i'd say Murphy's law seems to be a game mechanic.
