Fertilizer confusion

Sorry for the newbie question, but I'm a bit confused about the fertilizer and star ranking system with crops. I have a few questions:

1) Can you make fertilizer from rotted branches and weeds (like if I store them for a LONG time)

2) I'm using fertilizer from the store, and my crops never exceed 1 star, no matter how much I put on them. And I do know to put it on while they're growing, not after.

3) Lastly, the store is only buying my turnips for 150G and I bought them for 120G! I'm assuming I should save them and sell at the Bazaar?

Thanks!

1. I'm pretty sure you can use really old branches and weeds. But I am not positive.

2. I don't know what to do about that. But I guess if you could get better fertilizer it would work better.

3. Raul's shop buys things for less. You should try to save everything for the Bazaar. Only sell at the store if you are really in a pinch.

1. Interesting...can branches even get rotten? ^_^ But seriously, you can use rotten ingredients for other windmill recipes so I don't see why you wouldn't be able to use them for fertilizer too. Plus, when I played, I often kept a stack of branches in my inventory year-round, because weeds to go with them were harder to find, and I never had any difficulties making fertilizer even with old branches. The star-level never went down, that I noticed, either.

2. Put fertilizer on them every day, even if all you've got is Raul's fertilizer from his store. Though higher-star fertilizer that you can make yourself is of course better. Still, even with just Raul's fertilizer, if you use it every single day, with single-harvest crops like turnips you can usually go up about a 1/2 star or so per round. Then (once you have the grinding windmill - it's the one by Emiko and Lloyd's homes, the last one you get I think) grind the crop into seed (one crop makes 2 seed bags) and the seeds will retain their star-level. Then plant those, and keep fertilizing! It's entirely possible to get up to 4-5 stars in one season if you're diligent. But yeah, getting the crop from 1/2-star to 5-star in one round (with no grinding of the seeds) is not gonna happen, except maybe with wheat. Re-growables like peppers and corn, etc, take longer, but you can do the same thing with those. (Hopefully all this made sense...!)

3. Ditto what Googabooga said. Raul's prices aren't very good, so only sell stuff there if you really need to free up space or are in a serious pinch for money. I usually only sell him garbage (tin cans, boots, etc) and extra bugs when they start clogging up my inventory. Sometimes small fish, in order to make room for larger ones or ones that I can cook with. Also to up the amount of profit from your turnips, make turnip salad out of them! ^_^

1. Branches and weeds don't get rotten. You can keep them in your backpack forever.

2. Using .5 star fertilizer, crops will increase by .5 after 1 use, 4 uses, 7 uses, etc. There's a calculator out there. I'll edit this post with a link when I find it.

3. Do not sell to the store. Seriously. Plan your week out. Only sell in the case of emergency (and, later, keep 500-1000G set aside for emergencies).

Edit: Found it:

1. The age of weeds and branches doesn't matter.
2.I think if you mill a fertilizer with the weed and branch it buils up the number of stars your fertilizer has.
3.NEVER SELL AT RAUL'S!!!!!!
Hope this helps!!

ok so as to not clog the forum with similar questions, I will ask here. I just started playing this game and I have a question about the fertilizer on trees. And that spreadsheet above just confused me more so.... say I have a .5 star rank tree seed and after I plant it I use about 10 bags of raul's fertilizer on it will it be a 5 star rank by then or will it take more? I really don't want to have to plant a tree, fertilize it, get the fruit, then get the seeds by grinding it, cut the old one down and plant a new one again till I have a 5 star rank fruit tree.........

From what people have told me, you need 4,000 points to bring a tree's fruit up a half a star.

Formula for points a bag of fertilizer is worth is this: 80 + (s * 40), where s is the star rank.

So for every .5 star rank bag of fertilizer I put on my tree, I will only gain 100 points? If so I'm going to need a lot of fertilizer....

The key to fertilizing trees is to use your own. It takes little time to make and you can usually get about two bags a day (I usually find enough to make this). I only have 3 trees so far, so it's a decent fix. Use Raul's for everything else.

Don't worry. Fertilizer will still work on trees (and this applies to re-harvestable crops, too) even after their first crop. Just pick the fruit, and then fertilize. The tree (or crop) will continue to gain in star quality as fast as your fertilizer quality allows.

Even after the tree reaches 5-star fruit, I recommend continuing to fertilize it at least once or twice between each harvest, because the fertilizer seems to influence the number of fruits you get. If you don't fertilize at all, it's more likely you'll get only one fruit, or two if you're lucky. If you fertilize it a few times, you can pretty much guarantee that you will get three.

I'm not sure if fertilizer has an effect on trees in winter, though...definitely the tree doesn't grow in winter if it's not fully grown alread, but I'm not sure about star quality improvement...
