Do you go for a certain stereotype when you marry?
Well I usually like the special bachelors(or bachelorettes in male character only games). In older games:
BTN/FoMT Poupori, in AWL(both versions) Muffy, in AnWL Rock,In MM Dan,I haven't considered marrying in ToTT or HM(SNES), I have no intention of marrying in BTN for girl,I'll probably marry Rick in MFoMT,I don't own HM64 or the gameboy games. In the RF games: RF1-Sharron,RF2-Lionel(married Dorothy in first part),RF3-engaged to Pia,but not strong enough to face Aquaticus.RFF-trying to decide which Iris to marry,RFO-I haven't gotten a good look at the bachelors' personalities to make a decision,RF4-since it's still in development who knows?

I notice Pre-ToT/AP I went for pink hair, too. XD
Thus far, Popuri and Daisy are the few Bubbly types I go far, and Popuri's the only one I've married.
I guess I tend to go for most who have a mature/motherly-type romantic personality, whom Lyla, Older!Cecilia, Felicia, Shara, Lara, and Anissa fall under.
The awkward, introverted type comes in second, with Dorothy, MM!Dia, and Sabrina all fit under. Candice is something of a borderline crush case, though I never really feel an interest in marrying her after the fact. I notice this is my second favorite stereotype whom I've consistently enjoyed their romance with your love rival for them.
My typical first favorite that I love with their alternative romantic are the nurturing, yet innocent type. Elli with Doctor Trent in the Mineral Town Games, Ellen with Carl in Magical Melody, Julia with Elliot in the Island DS Games, and Renee with Toby in the Wii Games. I think my favorite pairing of all time so far would actually be Renee and Toby. :D I think of Julia as an interesting deviation in physical form, having the "hot body" usually possessed by Karen, Gwen, Eve, and Kathy, though I see some similarities between her and Elli and Renee for some reason.
I think Kathy's the only one of her niche that I've seriously fallen for. She only seems to have the rare tsundere instance when her pride as a horse racer is challenged, but I think that minimal tsun-ness is the perfect amount for her. Though I've STILL yet to marry her in a saved game file, she gave Phoebe a run for her money when I was befriending the two of them.
Speaking of which, what exact sort of niche does Phoebe belong in? At best, it seems like she's the female equivalent of a usually male "wacky inventor" stereotype filled in by Louis and HM64 Rick, but her biggest predecessor seems to actually be Ann from Magical Melody and the ORIGINAL Harvest Moon for SNES. Either way, I think she's the most unique bachelorette I've married so far with the mesh of traits she's been dealt, so is one of my most memorable favorites.

I like the popular ones for when I'm a girl. I like how you have to befriend a person before they start opening up to you, like Vaughn and Gray. It seems more realistic.
I've only played as a boy a few times, but I also go for the tomboy-ish type, like Gwen (MM) and Karen. My only exception to this is Julie from SI and IoH. She doesn't dress like a tomboy, but I like how she's hard working.

I like to marry special characters to collect all the babies, unless I don't think the special characters are worth bothering with, but it also depends on the game.
I like shy types, sometimes. I also like types that seem to be jerk-« Mr.Gourmet's shoes » with hearts of gold, like Nami (AWL), Owen and Selena (ToT versions for both), but it's not set in stone. I really liked Rock in AnWL, and his kid's adorable so I never regretted marrying him even though he's a slacker. In FoMT I married Ann because she seemed to be the only one who was normal, whereas all the other girls were a bit silly or had deeper love interests I didn't want to break up (Mary and Elli).
If there is one thing that connects most of them, it's the hair. I have a thing for Red hair (Owen, Nami, Selena, Ann).
At any rate, those are the only games I have to go by. I am ashamed to say this as a HM fan, but I really haven't played far enough into the hand-held games to get married because I don't like them too much. I didn't like IoH, SI, or WB. So even though I played all of those, I didn't get past the first year and I have to say NONE of the marriageable characters interested me in the slightest. The only reason I played DS as much as I have is the "collect them all" mentality of the sprites and all of the "completion lists" during the game. I married off everyone else and I'm currently, halfheartedly, wooing Keira to get her out of the creepy mine with monsters. Still at green heart level, now at year five.
I won't be playing the girl version of that game either. At any rate, I genuinely like Keira.
She's cute, though. I may marry Annissa in my AP guy's file just because she kinda reminds me of her.

My preferred marriage types:
Men: manly, reserved, sweet
Women: outgoing, spunky, sweet, friendly, even conceited (like Selena)
I never marry the quiet library-ish girls. They just don't appeal to me.
Also, attractiveness is important for both sexes. (whatever constitutes as "attractive" in cartoon characters..)
Examples for men: Gray, Wizard, Griffin, Cliff, Chase, Owen
Examples of Women: Karen, Popuri (even though she's childish), Gwen, Lilah, Selena, Kathy
