Will having a child be optional in this game?

In Grand Bazaar, you needed to buy the baby bed before you could trigger the pregnancy event.

Does anyone know if it's the same way in Tale of Two Towns?

In one of the stickied posts it shows pictures of what your child will look like so im sure you will be able to have a child

I think you have to upgrade your house in order for the pregnancy event to occur. You can move from one village to another, as you probably know. However, if your wive/MC is pregnant, it won't let you move to the other village unless you pay an additional 1mil in order to upgrade the house in the other village.

So based on that, I'm guessing you have to upgrade your house before getting the preggy event and eventually a baby.

I like HM games better when having a kid is optional. It feels more... realistic? xD

If you really don't want a kid, then go for Alisa since she won't have kids no matter what you do XD
Although, i think you won't be getting other upgrades around your farms, and possibly even the mine, unless you proceed to upgrade your house.

Hmm, since this is a ToTT thread involving children, I have a question of my own.

In one of the stickied threads, it says:

Not always, in some games, like IoH, the child's gender is set at the wedding event. I think I read somewhere that the gender is set at the birthing event; I'll go see if I can find that thread.

EDIT: I can't find it, but I'm almost 95% sure that the birthing event sets the gender.

In A Wonderful Life SE, you always get a boy unless you do a little side quest. The side quest will let you choose the gender of your child. So it's not always random but in this game i believe it is (as it is with all of the HM for the handhelds)

Yeah, I guess it's not always random. Since in Harvest Moon AP your spouse asks you what gender you want. Excuse my bad choice of words~

There's nothing wrong with that. Everybody has a few misconceptions or things they have forgotten/overlooked :D
