I won all the Spring ones, but lost all the Summer ones except for the desert. One of the Summer ones it was a tie but Pierre picked Bluebell :c

Ugh, that sucks... I guess it is random then, if you tie... I assumed that your village wins by default if you tie, but I guess not...

Yeah we both got a heart and two music notes so I'm assuming it is random. Or maybe by who won the festival before that one?

Could be... I won the festival before the one where I tied with the other village... I guess the only way to find out is if someone ties in their very first festival...

Oy, as if we needed another element of random to the festivals..

Hmm, maybe he just doesn't like me for whatever reason. Oh well, he's only sabotaging his chances at his town winning.
You said it, Butters!
Go Team Bluebelle!!!

Ok here is what happened on my first cooking festival:
I woke all ready to cook my herb salad, I'd been saving it for the cooking festival. I didn't know the mayor would give you the ingredients for the 1st 4 festivals so I was surprised when Ina gave me cucumber and oil and asked me to cook a Cucumber Namul. I complied cause the ingredients were 5 stars! But somehow the dish they produced was 4.5stars.
So I entered the salad Ina wanted me to bring. My team-mates were Ying and Ayame. Bluebell's were Laney, Georgia and Cam.
I was shocked when Pierre gave a "..." "..." "

" in that order, I was like "no way! My dish is a 4.5 stars one". Because I thought he was sampling the dishes in order of how we were standing, I was the one in the middle, but I guess not. I mean it isn't possible to get a "..." for a high-ranking salad right? Ying entered a herb salad while Ayame entered a tomato salad.
So anyway, Bluebell's was

for Laney and two "..."s for Georgia and Cam as expected. They entered 2 herb salads and 1 tomato salad.
So we were tied. Then Pierre chose Bluebell. I was like blagh that's not possible! We were tied!
We lost and I felt so terrible coz Ina was clearly disappointed (after she gave me "5 star" ingredients). I think Ying & Ayame lost it for us coz I mean I'm a beginner cook and if my ":lala:" dish goes head-to-head with Laney you know who would clearly win.
I don't think it's random. Although the symbols are indicators of how well your dish ranks, I think there are actually point algorithms that calculate how many points to award for each dish.

It wouldn't surprise me... HM games are more complicated than what they appear to the player... The programming doesn't really like to show you the exact pointage and stuff like that... Sorry for the loss, but I guess that answers the question about if you tie your very first festival... I guess it's somewhat random, though since we'll never know how the point algorithm turns out to the player, all we can do is guess that it's random to some point...
As for your 5 star ingredients coming down in quality, it's because your cooking rank counts as a hidden ingredient that's averaged into the ingredients you use... Since your items were high quality and your cooking rank was low, your cooking rank brought down the average of the entire dish... Also, this is probably why low quality ingredients will turn out with a higher star quality, since the cooking rank brings up the average... I believe it starts off as a 2.5 star equivalent and raises whenever you level up your cooking rank... I assume the highest level cooking rank is equivalent to a hidden 5 star ingredient...

Yeah, I'm guessing we'll be in the dark until some enterprising soul manages to hack that particular batch of code out of the game.
I think it will be a while.

I've been trying to do the cooking festival in tale of two towns is there a reason why my soup dish keep failing? Its the one for the first year Spring.

@anon: Um... it could be the quality of the dish. Are you using the ingredients the mayor gave you, or your own?
Well, have at least a smidgen of new info to share.
I entered the first salad contest of summer, for the glory of Bluebell, with a "fairly fresh" 1/2 star tomato salad. I got an ellipses (I expected worse). I was on a team with Laney and Ash, and between them they got a heart and a musical note.
Konohana's team was made up of Hiro, Ying and Reina. I figured I might actually win, but they all made musical note dishes and I lost. I ended up getting a 1/2 star bag of onion seeds.

Cooking festivals become exponentially harder after you've united the towns.
Expect you to have to carry the team as the opposing team sends out their best players at every one and you keep on getting scrubs on yours.

I know the teams are randomized but I don't think the judging is. Every time I enter a 4 1/2 star dish or higher my team always wins. And yes there has been some crappy food along side it. I had Cheryl on my team and she entered a failed dish and we still won. I think as long as you enter a 4 star or 4 1/2 star dish or higher you will win.
What is the use for the adamantite? I have about 6 or 7 of them and I still don't know what to do with them.
Is their only purpose to be sold?
