The fertilizer says it must go on seeds or already-growing crops.
So I planted some seeds and tried to use the fertilizer and it said "you can't fertilize this plot."

You need to plant the fertilizer like a seed in its own square. It'll fertilize the 8 spots around it if its not in an irrigation trench, or the entire trench if it's in one.

You don't put the fertilizer on the same square as the crop, you have to put them next to the crop or in the same furrow.

If you started in Konohana, I believe those pictures get shown to you when you get taught how to farm, if you do the tutorial.

By the way, did anyone try that second picture already? Does it really boost your crop to 5 stars? Because there are so many of them, and they're expensive. I am afraid of losing money on them...

I have not tried that spiral pattern yet, no...man, that's 24 fertilizers, so 24,000g... heh, maybe in Year 2.

But I have dug some long squiggling trenches that I put like 6 fertilizers in, and it definitely raises the crops more than just a single fertilizer would. (I use that for my crop festival crop, and sometimes to get the 1-star items that you need for some B-level requests).

Fertilizer lasts a ridiculously long time if it's only got one crop sharing the trench with it. I mean - those 6 I was talking about fertilizing my crop festival crop? They lasted a whole year.

The only way fertilizer really gets wasted is if you pick the crop, then leave the crop spot blank long enough that it reverts to untilled soil, breaking the trench and leaving you with a solid trench full of fertilizer that doesn't do anything. Then you have to destroy one of the fertilizers with your hammer in order to open up a spot to plant a crop in that trench again... (urg, had to do that once...so annoying...)

I tried putting a gazillion fertilizers in a trench and leaving the plant for a week after it was fully grown but it still was only .5 stars better...How long do you have to leave them for?

I believe fertilizer provides one quality point per day, with each star being 60 points. I have grown crops in a trench with 20 fertilizer, and things like Carrots or Onions end up about one star better. Since fertilizer only works when they're growing, not fully grown, it makes sense to only water things once per day, if you're not in any rush to get them.

Did you put the fertilizer in when the crop was seeds or growing? I think it only affects the crop when you just plantit and its still in seed form.

Pardon revitalizing this thread but I just started playing the game a few days ago and been confused with the Fertilizing as it's way different from in Grand Bazaar, and I really didn't feel like creating yet another topic on Fertilizing just for people to repeat themselves.

I was under the impression that it was good to pop in a fertilizer in the middle of 8 surrounding crops, but the first picture in this post suggests popping in 8 fertilizers with a single crop in the middle?! Won't that take up lots of space in your fields to plant 8 fertilizers per crop? The second picture seems a li'l crazy to me.

I've been checking Gombe's shop daily and he hasn't stocked any Fertilizer yet (am around the middle of Spring year 1).

What do you people do with your Fertilizer? I'm used to having fields full of crops, not fertilizers.

Pardon my confusion.

You can use trenches, this way your fertilizer will affect not only the 8 crops around it, but the whole trench. Those pictures are for you to get a 5 start rank crop, wich everyone will need at some point of the game. You don't need to do that at the start of your game. In fact, I really would advice you to NOT u se fertilizers till your farm is big enough / have the needed expansions. After all, even if you get the 5 star crop, after all theh fertilizer you spent on it, you won't want to just sell it... You'll want to turn it into seeds... and for that you need the waterwhell expansion, that goes in Konohana. Hope this will help you a bit.
