Those pictures are for you to get a 5 start rank crop, wich everyone will need at some point of the game. You don't need to do that at the start of your game. In fact, I really would advice you to NOT u se fertilizers till your farm is big enough / have the needed expansions. After all, even if you get the 5 star crop, after all theh fertilizer you spent on it, you won't want to just sell it... You'll want to turn it into seeds... and for that you need the waterwhell expansion, that goes in Konohana. Hope this will help you a bit.
I have a fertilizer in one of my trenches and it doesn't affect the crops around the trench only the trench itself.

What I meant was that it is more useful to put a fertilizer on a trench instead of digging single holes and planting them arount the crop. Sorry if it mislead you, but the fertilizer on a trench will only work on a trench, as you said.

Ok just wanted to make sure :)

Okay so trenches are best for Fertilizer. Any particular placement within the trench is best? Or just plop one at the beginning of the trench, then all the crops within that trench is covered with fertilizing goodness? Does it matter if the trench is 9 plots long vertically or is it preferred 5 plots long horizontal? Would the entire trench be covered with the Fertilizer effect or is the max 8 crops in the trench that will pounce on the effects of the Fertilizer?

Pardon all the questions ^_^ I really appreciate the responses so far.

I think all the crops on the trench will be fertilized, however having many crops means that the fertilizers will last shorter.

The more crops reduces life span of Fertilizer. huh .. I did not know that, but it certainly makes sense. *nods* So going horizontal with trenches of 5 plots is probably best, so one plot gets a Fertilizer, 4 plots get the crops, then make a new 5 plot trench and repeat.

If only Gombe would stock his Fertilizer ... too bad I can't tell him a joke in exchange for one! haha

Yep, it is as Lucaspontes said, the bigger the trench, the more fertilizer it will use, and it will last shorter.
About the use... I usually like to put it at the first plot of the trench. But honestly, it does not mind where you put it, as long as it is within the trench. Ny the way, if you have a trench and put a fertilizer out of it, but beside it, it will fertilize the first crop on the trench, and only it. I noticed that as I planted a fertilizer for my fruit trees and it started to fertilize the crops on the trenches right close to it.

Lunadora, you have been most helpful and I fully understand Fertilizers much better now! I'll keep that in mind esp with planting them outside of trenches and will remember to plop one next to fruit trees whenever I acquire them.

Thanx also to everyone else, feel free to tackle the cookies I tossed over to Lunadora!

I forgot to mention that if you put the fertilizer in the right place it will fertilize 2 trees, if you plant them side by side. Note that Trees use 3x3 plots of your land, so you might want to save those for very late in the game.

Gonna have to bring this back... Those pictures on the main site show a spiral furrow, but I remember Ina saying that you can only make them in a straight line. How do you get them to curve like that?

Make another thread to ask your question. Posting in threads this old is against the forum rules.

I did get the tutorial from Ina in Konohana, which only verbally said what the fertilizer did, when she gave us 1.

I did not really see any pictures of that use of fertiizer though.

What is the difference of using the Fertilizer in trenches like that or in regular holes?
I am having no luck at getting my trench timing correct. I am looking forward to my first tool upgrade being my hoe.

Even when I hammer the end of a trench, I cannot redo the trench, it just creates another hoe, and makes the very short trench of 3 spots, 2 spots.

I also thought that when forming a trench, you could not change the direction of a trench. I even thought that Ina said something like that will break the trench.

I know to walk forward, and press the A button, but I am having no luck with the timing.

Thanks for the advice about not really using fertilizer, until later. That is a good idea. I will only be able to ship or use the crop for requests. Within a month it will be considered Fairly fresh. In 2 months, it will be rotten. At least the corn that I picked 4 days ago is Fairly Fresh already, as are the radishes and red roses, I picked the same day.

They are not going to hold until I get the seedmaker in over a year, and they will only take up storage space.

Can anyone give better tips for the trenches though? That will make watering the crops easier.
