Tori-chan wrote:Well, I play for both O.o Farming is so much fun, same as the social part. If one of these things would be missing, it wouldn't be Harvest Moon for me. And with the social part I mean befriending the villagers, talking to them, giving gifts and such. So not necessarily marriage. But I think marriage spices things a bit up, because at least in my case, you have always something to look forward to. (Getting married, having a child, this grows up...)
So, I play Harvest Moon mostly because it's a perfect mix of all. ^^
This is how I feel. If one was lacking, I wouldn't like to play. and I've found that the best HM games are the ones who blend the aspects well. Honestly, I find a lot of the HM games lacking in the social department so those tend to be the ones I like/play less. There will always be farming but whether or not the social aspect is good or not in the game is to be seen. And then there are other things like what the town is like.

I feel like if the social aspect wasn't there I couldn't play it, but I also don't have any interest in strict dating sims either. Socializing makes me not feel alone in the game and it gives me something to look forward to. It gives the game life. But at the same time, I can get completely absorbed in my farming where I take up a task for that day and see that it gets done.

I find that you really ought to not have too much farming to do or else your game days get bogged down. It's how I play anyway. I like to do other stuff besides farming like fishing and especially mining I love. I am more of a crop farmer since I feel like they are easier to take care of than animals. But I usually do keep a full chicken coop and a handful of big animals for their milk, wool, and other products.

I play for the farming. The characters aren't near developed enough and the marriage aspect is far too shallow for me to really care about it. If its there I will interact with the villagers for completions sake or if its AWL just so I can see how they change over the years and its probably the only game I really care about it but I could go without it quite easily.

Make the socialization aspect more than give a villager the same gift over and over and having repeated dialogue heard over and over just destroys any illusion of being part of a village. Have them FREAKING INTERACT AND TALK TO EACH OTHER(seriously, I can't get immersed into these games and feel like I'm part of a village if they act like nobody else exists), just... give them some sort of AI and then I may care for it more.

tl;dr
Socialization aspect is too shallow, I farm.

I've realized the farming aspect interest me less in less over time. I'm finding myself hardly able to play a HM game for a long time because I get bored so quickly :/ so the family/social aspect of it is much more important to me...which mean that I can't play pretty much all HM x__x

I'm being completely honest with you. I play it for the villagers, marriage candidates, kids, etc. You know? I farm, but I do it to make money. It's one of the bland aspects of the game :T
Spicy, I am dissapoint. :(
Let me show my original reaction:
*looks around in random store*
*spots Back to nature*
*sees cute farmer boy next to cute animals*
Me:...... :D Thoughts:(I want this for Christmas this year..)

This actually was a confession I submitted recently that seemed to fit with this topic:
Spoiler:

Anyways, I had first read about HM64 in an issue of Nintendo Power when I was a kid. The farming and stuff looked interesting, but the romance portion interested me more since I had never seen elements like that in a game before. But I ended up getting the GB game, which has no romance or other social elements, but I got into the farming. So now I enjoy both elements of HM, the social and the farming.

Hey I saw that on the HMConfession site X3.

But yeah people can play for whatever reason they want. I don't get married in HM but I still think the social feature is important to the overall feel of the game.

Well...I kinda feel bad for admitting it, but the social aspects of HM are a little more important to me.

Which isn't to say that I don't like farming. I do enjoy it. I just...well, it's pretty much the same in most HMs, so I need something more to make me buy a new HM game.

I think farming and socializing complement each other, in a way. I'm encouraged to work harder on my farm to make more money or food, so that I can get/make better gifts for the townspeople. And...well, I can't think of a good way that socializing complements farming, but I'm sure there is one.

Aaaw don't feel bad quigley.

No one should have to feel bad for why they play a game. Different people enjoy different things.

I play for the farming :) To me, seeing my file grow from nothing to having a nice farm gives me a satisfaction. Getting married, having a kid, and friendships are just a nice little add on feature. Both combined is what makes me love HM.

I play for the farming of course :D
I looove growing crops they are my favorite! Fall is my favorite season for growing crops except in SI. I like animals too, especially sheep.
The social aspects of HM are poorly executed in my opinion. It feels like a chore having to befriend people.
I hate HMs that make you miss things by not marrying. Such as MM where you'd miss musical notes, and AP where you'd miss 2 powerberries AND miss out on new game+. That was a huge turn off for me.

If the characters were more engaging with non cookie-cutter personalities and actually interacted with each other outside of events, I might actually take socializing seriously. I think people like the dating so much because humans crave social interaction, especially the romantic kind. I mean people obsess over dating and kissing and kids and marriage and all that stuff in real life too :p I'm probably some weird alien from another planet since I hate socializing and find romance repulsive though heh heh heh.

I play for farming. Dating sim and social aspect are just side features to me. Sure, both farming and social aspect must be present in the game, otherwise it won't feel 'Harvest Moon-y.' The social and dating aspect were fun in older games, but in newer games I found it a bit bland. Newer games tend to have more things to do and it keeps me being busy so I paid less attention to relationship in general.

It doesn't mean I hate marriage stuff, I like it actually. However, HM is a poor dating sim. Characters are not developed enough for me to like a character to the root, not to mention most of them are static and too shallow. Marriage is always optional anyway (with exception of AWL series), but farming is a must in every HM.

I really like Farming and of course Harvest Moon Wouldn't be the same without it. But I have to say the part of the game I look forward to most is the Marrige, characters etc.

I play for both equally. I wouldn't play a Harvest Moon game without the sim elements, and I wouldn't play a Harvest Moon game that only had sim elements.

I play for both. The farming and social aspects compliment each other, and I agree that Harvest Moon wouldn't be what it is if it was lacking one or the other.

That being said, there ARE some games where I find the whole social aspect to be a bit tedious, and others where farming becomes just a way to get more money. It depends on how well developed the characters are, to be honest.
