My problem is a little different. I kept getting failed dishes. I've been playing hm titles for a while, so I know how cooking works. Even using ingredients that the mayors handed to me. I tried multiple times, different order of ingredients. No go.
I would go to shops on days that they should be open, during the right times, and find them closed. I super-duper double checked the signs and the calendar, went into different areas and came back, still closed.
I considered this a problem with the save file, so I started a new game on the second save slot. Different town. Same issues.
And last night it froze. I was a bit relieved. Now I have something solid to say when I turn in my cart for a new one besides "I can't cook and my shop-owners are lazy".

Can I get a mod to edit that post? I must have butterfingered on my phone and dropped in an agrees that has nothing to do with the topic at hand. n_n;

This can happen if you forget to add a cooking utensil to your dish if the recipe requires one. It actually is a very common issue.
The shops are closed on all-rainy days or on town specific festival days. I am not sure why the shops would be closed 24/7 though; that's the first time I've heard of it.

I've had the game for 2 days and I've put about four hours into it and haven't had a freeze yet. It's not much, but I thought it might help you guys if I post what I've been doing.
What I do in the game:
I chose a female character and moved to Konohana. I go water all my plants in the morning (I usually stay on the Konohana side. I've only gone on the Bluebell side three times.) and go into town afterwards to check the board. After that I go up in the mountain until about 4pm. I later come back down, talk to a few people, finish requests, and ship what I've collected. Then I go home, water my plants again, save, and go to bed.
How I have my 3ds while I play:
I always have my wi-fi off, I have the brightness on one, and I have power-saver on.
Just a thought here: For people who have their wi-fi on, did you receive anything over wi-fi when your game froze?
I hope this can help in someway.

The shop owners ARE lazy. "Oh no! It's raining! I think I'll just stay in bed today! No one would ever shop in the rain!" Between scheduled days off, festivals, and rain these shopkeepers have a lot of down time to play Harvest Moon on their little DS's.
Also: Still no freezes since I shut off WIFI.

My games freezes all the time!!!!!!
I hate it it's like every couple days (hm time!!!)
Especial when I cross over from the slanted part of the mountain to the top of the mountain.
Especially on cooking festival days
And sometimes during the petting game.
Sigh what a pain

I'm on day 30 of spring. The game has frozen on me about 10 times. It's always when I'm going deeper into the mountains from either side. This is completely inexcusable, bug testing should have caught something as major as this. The only reason I'm still playing is a hope that the problem will go away in summer.
They probably rushed this out because they don't want to sink more time and money into a version of a game that already came out for a system that hasn't been selling well. I would be VERY surprised if they did anything about the glitches. I emailed their customer support a couple of days ago, no response. This means I'll be waiting a couple of weeks after their next game is released so I can be sure I won't have this issue again.
Sorry I'm complaining anonymously on your forum, my computer died yesterday and I'm struggling with my phone.

I know it sucks, but bear with it, I went though all spring and a little summer with the game freezing at a constant note, then one day it just stoped. Be patient, good luck.
Its worth complaining about, you didnt spend 40 dollars for glitches.

Lawl I'm already fed up. I started in Bluebell with my Male char, nothing happened really.
Then.. I decided to play a girl char in Konahana just to see how it goes... and I find a Red and Yellow wonderful on Day 3. Drowned and found an amethyst; 1 cow and a full field of potato/turnips, a pretty decent start I'd say. I step out of the house to get a huge lag spike on Day 7 (the Cooking Fest). Water my crops, go out to forage, went back to empty out and cook my dish and went back up the mountain from Kona to Bluebell and at 11:39 the game clocks out. I hard-reset and pretty much tried to recreate the same conditions and no freezing took place, which made it seem very odd to me...

I'm not very far into my game yet, but I haven't encountered any freezing as of yet. I've gotten lag, but it's tolerable enough.

I'm glad to see that this is a big enough issue that Natsume will probably take action to remedy it, but I'm sorry that many others seem to be experiencing this as well.
My game has frozen at least 10 times now. I'm just nearing the end of Spring at this point. It always freezes when I am traveling between screens in the mountains. The top screen will just stay black and the music will stop. Now whenever I go through screens I get really anxious, thinking, "Oh, this time it'll freeze for sure." It's frustrating because traveling between the two towns is a pretty big part of the game.
I usually try to stop in each screen and catch a bug or something and I also try to keep my bag relatively empty. I have not traveled with the cart yet.
I always play with my 3D and WiFi off, so I don't think that is the problem. I bought my 3DS about two months ago and I don't ever leave it in sleep mode. It is turned off regularly and hasn't been even close to overheating. Ocarina of Time also played on it with absolutely no problem, so I'm in the camp that it's definitely the game that is the problem, not the 3DS.
I have a girl character and I live in Bluebell.
I am still playing the game because I really enjoy it, but it's pretty frustrating and I hope Natsume does something about it soon. I really hope they are able to release a free patch that we can download.

Here's a theory: does your home town play a factor in the freezing issue?
I read on another forum that one player had the freezing issue with their Bluebell character, so they started a new game and chose Konohana, and played for hours without it freezing.
If you have the freezing issue, could you post which town you're playing in? Currently, my character is living in Bluebell, and I still have the game freeze on occasion. It'd be interesting to see if changing towns would eliminate the freezing.

Actually, I think using the horse/cart while riding through the mountain might be causing the freeze. I'm going to try running through the mountains tonight while I play without using the horse or cart, and I'll post back here in a few hours if there aren't any freezes.

@___@ Mines been freezing so often. I turned off 3D. Turned off wi-fi. Stopped riding my horse w/cart since it seemed to happen when changing scenes in the mountains. And then just a few minutes ago it froze for the first time without a black screen. It's Fall9 at 1:39 Pm and I saw Mikhail walking towards the peak and I turned to say hi and it froze. It's still frozen. This is like the 20+ time it's frozen.

I thought Summer would never end. (Fall is gorgeous, btw.)
Edit: Female character; Lived in Bluebell entire time; Year 1. I've planted in all available spaces in Konohana and Bluebell. Towards the end of summer in Konohana, the corn made me laggy.

I too had a freeze in the mountain area scene change. But I noticed that I had it on the highest brightness. I have since turned my brightness down to 1, but wifi is still on. This has seemed to stop the freezes temporarily. So my 2 cents worth - Turn your brightness down to 1 or 2.
