I've never played this game either, but I've read part of the guide for it in Nintendo Power.
There is no normal leveling. You have to kill bosses to get stronger.

I read in a book that when you create a character(I think thats cool if its true)that a couple shops appear and that you can create up to 8 characters...Is this true?

Well it's fun Multiplayer but to go multiplayer you have to have multiple GBA's and Multiple GBA to GC link cables, and yes for every character you create your main town gets a new family dedicated to your profession such as my character Leon the Farmers Son, his family grows the seeds I mail to them after every level.

Ooh, I have tips!
You can create 8 characters in a single file, so you'll have all the shops in your hometown, but I reccomend you only play with one character, because after each boss battle your character gets to select an artifact that will either improve offense, defense, magic, add a new heart or make it possible to always cast a certain spell. The more artifacts you have, the stronger your character becomes, so if you use two or three different characters, they won't become as strong as fast and you might have trouble later on in the game.
Definately create up to four characters, because at the end of each game year, there's a celebration and the families of the first four characters you create will be there to celebrate your sucessful return. ^^
After you beat a boss and collect a drop of mhyrr, you can immediately go back and beat it again (I'd reccomend doing this) to get more artifacts, and the boss won't have gotten any tougher. If you allow a few years to pass between when you first beat a boss and the next time you encounter it, it will have gotten stronger, and thus, more difficult to defeat.
The more often you go through a dungeon and collect mhyrr, the more enemies will appear, and they'll also become tougher to defeat. But there's no worries if you've got enough artifacts. ^^ The enemies don't get stronger if you repeatedly go through a dungeon after you've gotten the mhyrr...so if you go through the River Belle Path five consecutive times and defeat the boss there, the enemies won't have gotten stronger (but you will have, because you'll have stat-boosting artifacts!)
Have fun, this is a great game! ^__^

I went with a Clavat, because I personally like to use more physical attacks rather than magic attacks...Selkies are good too, though they're supposed to be better at magic. I think all the tribes are pretty even though...just pick a cool looking character and go! ^^

Oooh!
a huge tip is, whenever a year passes, talk to all the family members with every character! The characters will have better relations with their family, and the shops will have better things for you.
Also, sending fruit seeds home will result in having a tree planted by your house, and you can get food from the trees.
Advantages of Each Tribe :
Clavat > Chocobo Shield & Gaia Plate, highest defense
Selkie > Speed, Meteor focus attack (best focus attack imo)
Yuke > Magic Speed, cool defense stance
Lilties > Highest attack, best weapon (attack-wise)
