I can't seem to get the alpaca to save my soul.

So I just Keep one cow, one jersey cow, one suffolk sheep, and one regular sheep.

I had two cows, one jersey cow, and one alpaca. I focus on crops when I live in Konohana, but the alpaca and cows are good for money, too.

Same here. When I got the new cows, sheep, and chickens, I couldn't bring myself to get rid of my old ones.

I'm planning to have two cows, two sheeps and two chickens when I live in Konohana. I'll start there, and I believe that's the maximum you can have. Since the greates animals only appear in year two, and I want to live in Bluebell, I'll let that for latter in the game. Then, I plan to get five cows (two normal and three jersey); five sheep (two normal and three sulfok) and six alpacas (three of each). And as many chicken as I can.

Yes, I'm still waiting for my copy, so that's way I have all the plans and no facts :(

For me - in Year 1 starting in Konohana, I just bought 1 of each - 1 Chicken, 1 Cow, 1 Sheep.

Then in Year 2 I fill up the Konohana barn by buying 1 each of the new livestock - 1 Silkie, 1 Jersey, 1 Suffolk.

Once alpacas become available, I move to Bluebell and buy 1 of each color of alpaca. By then I have a good stock of Wool and Good Wool stored up from my Sheep and Suffolk, so when I move back to Konohana, I leave my sheep behind in stasis and take the two alpacas with me to Konohana instead.
