The Oracles alchemy potions?

So I went to the Oracle this evening and got her to make me a Canine Companion. The problem is that I'm not sure how to use it... I've tried equipping it, which didn't work. I've tried throwing it on the ground near my dogs and they didn't touch it. Then I thought that I might have to put it in the food bin. Nope.

So does anyone know how to actually use these?

Weird question, but, can you drink it? Lulz. XD I'm totally serious. o -o

Put it down.
Throw your dog near it.
If it failed try again.
The process is actually same like when you want to give food to wild animal. The food must near enough to it. And sometimes your dog doesn't come close to eat it. Repeat it several times until it does.

Alright then. I figured it out.

Turns out you do eat it! xD Then your dogs come running over to you and love you and etc etc.
