Yes, if your dog has a lot of friendship points (not sure of the exact number). You shouldn't have to fence them in if your dog is able to scare the wild dog before he gets to your animals. But you still have to leave your dog outside, then, so I would recommend the fence. Fences also help you keep your animals in one place which saves time when putting cows/sheep back in the barn.
I always use fences, but I leave my animals outside all night as long as the next day's weather is clear, just because it's too much hassle for me to put them back in the barn. If you're planning on putting your animals inside every night and leaving your trained dog outside, then using a fence isn't necessary (although still recommended:P).

Yeah I gotta say, making a fence is the best way, even if it's kinda tiny at least it keeps them contained and safe. My dogs only at 3 hearts and iv seen him send wild dogs run away helping with their tail between their legs. But its almost like an old man dog, even if it awakes from it's slumber it takes it's sweet time to get over there, half the time it gives up before it reaches it! Lol
