I like the fact there are no rivals - 90% of the pairings felt forced throughout the series, and most of them really weren't good matches in the end. I think Rock and Lumina are kind of the poster couple for that.
plus, it helps keep the characters the way they are, without the marriage events they may have that may botch their personality (...like Celia, from an event I saw on YouTubenever made it through AWL blegh) or them just disappearing altogether, which is what I've heard happens to Popuri if she marries Kai.
To tell the truth, I liked the rival system in Grand Bazaar, where the events didn't end in marriage, but there were still events.

aaaah, the ap system. besides gill/luna and luke/selena which i thought were two more terrible matches i liked the system - you had to really work for the couple to get married and it made you frenz in the process.
GB is quite yawn-inducing, but some aspects of it weren't bad. I did like the rival system, and the windmill idea was pretty neat. I tried replaying it last weekend and I got so bored in a few minutes I just went to go play DS Cute. My poor copy of GB.
@Zetta
Well....for me Gill/Luna were ok I guess....well not really :D it seemed that Gill was too mature for Luna
and Selena and Luke...well it ok..I guess? Mabye Luke should have been with Luna... but i dont see Selena would be with Gill
Yeah! I deleted one of my files in GrB but i just got bored very easily Grb was the first HM game I played when I could actually understand it :D I got AWL when I was like...8 and I didnt really get anything :D

I always found that Luke and Selena were a good match imo. They just seemed like a fun couple. Even if they both had some clashing aspects, they still worked it out.
/I think two stubborn people together are cute
/this is coming from a stubborn person to boot
/either know how to give, but when they do.... <3

I like that there are no rivals. :< When rivals are present, my fangirl-side feels the need to dislike the girl who's after my man. I can never like Maya ever.
Ack, speaking of Maya and forced pairings... Ugh, Maya/Chase is one of the dumbest rival parings ever. Especially since that pairing just comes out of nowhere. I know Chase's schedule like the back of my hand (I didn't stalk him or anything...), and he never ONCE goes to the Inn outside of events. Yolanda AND Maya never go to the bar. It just makes me URGH.
Anyways, back on topic. 8D; I think the only rival pairing that could possibly work out is Tina/Rod. Probably. They both look like cheerful people who would get along easy. But that's about it, really...

...that's partly why i have rival issues, too. xD it took me forever to actually bother to befriend luna in my second girl file because I married Gill in my first in AP. I refuse to be friends with Selena, though, no matter which game I don't marry Luke in. I just don't like her.
a decent bit of the AP couples were... kind of awkward, and were based on similar interests, it seemed: horses for kathy/owen, the bar for selena/luke, bossing people around for luna/gill, clothes for candace/julius, fishing for renee/toby, doctorism for anissa/jin, food for maya/chase which is a terrible reason to like someone i mean c'mon and exploring for phoebe/calvin. It was all based on a single thing that brought them together, which was ridiculous, since attraction/love/compatibility isn't always based on shared interests. then again, if you delve into rival couples deep enough, they ALL seem forced.
i think sanjay/yuri would be a good rival couple... and maybe neil/iroha or something. :3 but it doesn't really matter.

I enjoyed Gil and Luna because even in ToT you could see some hints of it.
ToT Cathy and ToT Owen worked a lot better than their AP counterparts.
My problem with Luke and Selena was the direction they took with it. It could have worked cause they are both stubborn, but instead it was like "I'm at a bar, bit drunk, marry me!"

^ Well, in AP it was like that with Kathy and Owen, except it was "I'm at a bar, hammered as « Cow Poopoo », marry me" except not that eloquent. Worst pairing ever.
Luke and Selena at least seemed pretty happy.
But I would've preferred Kathy/Luke and Owen/Selena.
Most of the AP events were like "first event > omg i so mad at u now *storms off* second event > let's get married yo!" except for Toby and Renee
I liked most of the rival couplings but after the first few events you realize they all follow the same formula. The events could have had more thought put into them.
(also Chase and Maya go together, because in ToT the bar was part of the inn... in AP they did this whole thing where Yolanda is forcing Chase to teach Maya because she can't stand it anymore or something)

most of my problem was the formula thing as well - one thing in common, omg im so mad at u, lol its okay lets get married. I think the couples should have been a bit more scrambled, focusing on more than just that... and I really hated the proposals for most of them. Toby and Renee's, Luke and Selena's, and Kathy and Owen's really really annoyed me. One of them was random and she didn't even notice it was coming, and two of them were drunken slurs at the bar.
I don't like Chase and Maya because even if they have the food thing in common, they're just not good for each other... I can't remember, but I think in one of the games Dakota says her parents are always fighting. It's healthy to fight once in awhile, but at least two or three of the couples have an unhealthy dose of fighting going on in their events and in the implied dialogue. I don't mind most of them, but the way they were thrown together didn't exactly go well with me. I don't think Luke and Selena worked very well because of her... er... attention-hogging and his obliviousness. They just didn't seem to fit. Kathy/Luke and Owen/Selena would've been nice. also i think gill should have been with someone who wasn't luna. maybe renee or something.

^As much as I would have liked it the other way around as well, Kathy and Owen were hinted ever since ToT since she would always visit him at work.
I love Chase and Maya <3 funniest rival couple in the history of HM. Not as sweet as Doctor and Elli, but still great :)
@Zetta: Them fighting is what made them so great. They were so different that they worked great with one another, and they needed one another. Maya needed Chase for support, and Chase needed someone goofy like Maya to take away the cold, serious front he always has.

Me too! I remember my courting plans being destroyed by Rick in my first ever HM game, FoMT... Even though I despised the fact at the time, I feel like the rivalry has always been such a MAJOR aspect in HM. This game better be able to make up for the fact unlike GrB and ToTT...Lord_Banks wrote:So sad... I miss having to fight off another guys advances, hmm that sounds different than what I meant... Anyway I do miss it

There are no rivals in ANB, sorry, Sorry1 ( started writing this before learning you name was Sorry1).
@everyone else- I agree some of the rivals, no not some, most, have seemed forced, I still honestly believe in the system, it was nice to have someone with whom to fight for someone's affections, but before they make anymore rivals, I would like them to have a couple of different kinda of rivals, like two people who are both happy, charismatic people, one where one comes from a family where she didn't receive much attention, and one who just likes to praise people, another where they are both mature people forced to grow up, like their parent(s) or sibling died, stuff like that that you would see in real life...

Thanks for answering my question guys.
@everyone: I too feel that with the rivals, some of the relationships do feel forced. I'm really good friends with Maya in AP but I feel Chase is no where good for her with the way he treats her. Come on, he doesn't even teach her correctly and then yells and blames her when she messes up. Toby and Renee were ok but not that great and the same goes for Kathy and Owen. I couldn't understand Popuri and Kai cause it felt like she only liked him for his looks and he only put up with her to get at Rick. Same goes for Luke and Selena ,cause Luke acts childish and Selena seems really stubborn at times, and Rock and Lumina, seriously, she can do better .
