OK! So I literally just got this game for my bday and im sooo totally lost.
I dont know what to do, or how to get anywhere in the game.
how long does it take to advance and make some real progress in the game.
and what are some money making techniques that might be useful in the long run.

Make sure you listen to the tutorials as you go along. The game will guide you in the basic steps to planting, caring for crops and harvesting them.
There are a lot of different activities and as you reach each activity someone in the game will give you the basics.
Gannon will teach you how to use the fishing rod when you buy it from him, Mirabelle will give you your first chick when you build the coop and a calf when you build the barn, Regis will explain about mining when you raise Volcano. You will need to buy a lamb from Mirabelle and she will give you specific instructions on each animal's care.
Once you have those basics down you can look up anything you want on the index page the others have mentioned.
If you are still confused after playing for a while, post a thread with your specific question and you won't have to wait long for an answer
