This. You can get 0-2 gelatin from a single bubble of lava. This is a good 300pt gift to give to villagers when trying to get their sunstones from them.
Save frequently. If you save and fall down a hole either on purpose or accidentally and end up passing out from the fall, then you can just reload back up to the floor you were last on and try again.
Interesting side note: the European version of the game calls it 'jelly' not 'gelatin', just like eggplants are called 'aubergines' in the European version. So any European gamers out there, when the sites talk about 'gelatin', they talking about 'jelly' ^^
You can recover enough energy by eating some of the gelatin and all of the black herbs. Not enough to continue mining, but it could be enough for you to survive a fall through a pitfall before you reach the stairs to the top of the mine.
A good way to get as much gelatin (or any mining item) as possible during one trip into the mine is to save before each and every lava bubble you water/stone you smash. This might take a pretty large amount of real time, but it allows you to make the most out of your stamina, and at the same time protects you from losing a lot when falling down a pitfall and having to reload
Later on this might be too annoying to do, but it certainly helps in the beginning of the game ^^
If you have a lot of orange wonderfuls, you could put an extra one (you should have the most in your hammer to get the most gems) in your watering can. You will get more than one stack (99) of gelatin that way.
