What the heck just happened?

My chicken died of illness and almost everybody went down to one heart (instead of two). What the heck?! I wish it didn't do that. I know it decreases FP, but how much exactly?

If your chicken dies of old age nothing will happen. If your chicken gets sick because you leave it outside in the rain or don't feed it, the villagers get mad at you and everyone will lose friendship points (about 100 I think).

Mirabelle will probably yell at you for not taking care of your chicken properly. If the chicken dies of old age she will tell you about the death but she will be sympathetic.

If any of your animals die of sickness, you will lose 2,000 affection points with EVERYONE. If your animal dies of old age, it's nothing to worry about. That doesn't have any effect on your relationships with the other characters in the game. (This info applies to every part of the Harvest Moon series.)
