I have absolutely no idea why the makers would remove the rival aspect of the game...I mean seriously, it really was a major aspect of the game to me having that little bit of extra competition as well as LOVE. Now it feels like your character is the only one that can experience love for another character making all the other characters of your gender seem as if they have to love interests like in past games...
BUT THAT"S EXACTLY IT! It gives people something to talk/argue about! I remember how pissed I was way back when I was playing FoMT and Rick took Karen from me after courting her for so long, but I still LOVE having rivals in HM despite that horrible time...!stella96 wrote:Maybe they thought it would be too forced.
And they could design characters how they wanted and not to match a boy or girl.
Plus remember all the Vaughn and Sabrina « Baaaa *glomp* »?
Good gosh haha
I actually liked them as a couple though but everyone was up in arms about them!

If the confessions are anything reliable to go by, it appears some people just went ahead and married bachelors for more... aggravatingly self-righteous reasons instead of out of love.
Hey, if this prevents rampant labeling of "Scrappy" Characters amongst the fandom, I don't mind this reprieve from the rival system for now.
I get the feeling if they went with the HM64 relationships, Rick would have been a secret bachelor and he wouldn't be as hated as much.
And I guess Mary, ether. Because he gets Harris instead.
Then again, I really liked his reactions around Mary. His Mineral Town incarnation can actually be more relatable thanks to that dynamic. But I guess if that's true, then those guys who can relate to Mineral Town Gray must have some extremely clingy yandere love interest hovering around them, too.

And then I miss all of this while being unable to edit due to my anon-fish status.Akatsuki no Vaughn wrote: And I guess Mary, ether. Because she gets Harris instead.

But one of my point still stands:
HM64/Flowerbud Rick would likely be way more popular as a secret bachelor with this personality and family dynamic in comparison to the one many grew to loathe thanks to his relationship with Kai and his problematic sister complex.
I was a bit bummed out when I found out there were no rivals in this game. However, I've said it before and I'll say it again, the bachelors/bachelorettes seem like they would be forced in this game. No couple pops up to me and says "HEY! We'd be a couple!" So for this game, I'll say that I'm glad there's no rivals for that pure reason. However, I do miss the rival system. It was fun seeing everybody else getting married and living happy together

that's really how i feel about the rival system overall; it's a nice system... but most of the pairings throughout the game series feel forced. I do like the lack of rivals in this game solely because there will be no one acting or developing out-of-character or in a way that doesn't work for them for the sake of a rival relationship/ event. like the popuri/kai thing where she just goes off and leaves her family, cliff/ann's couple development which didn't work, luna/gill and selena/luke where both couples pretty much just involved the girls yelling at the boys and then randomly marrying them later on...pshycho wrote:I was a bit bummed out when I found out there were no rivals in this game. All I can say to forced rivals is love is weird, but I agree, Marvelous, I almost said Natsume by accident... Anyway Marvelous seems to have taken that to the extreme sometimes! Though, there have been moments where rivals fit, if not well, they at least made sense, such as Nami and Gustava(?) and Basil and Nina, or Gray and Sabrina, Oh and Rick and Karen.

Granted Vaughn was a Gray clone but let's not get into that haha...
And a lot of people switch Natsume and Marvelous at least you catch the difference though
Marvelous wanted bachelor/ettes to be free, because they didn't want the fans to be stressed by the rival couples. They wanted people to relax without worrying about the rival events. I just got a feeling like that.
I really liked the rival couples from the older games:
Nami x Gustafa
Muffy x Griffin
Elli x Trent
Mary x Gray
Popuri x Kai
etc. They made a sense.
But I wasn't a fan of the new couples, which were more messy (Natalie x Pierre -« What The Eggplant »)

Sorry, I mention Gray and Mary, Vaughn and Sabrina I have no comment about, they aren't a great couple, but they aren't a bad couple eitherstella96 wrote:Vaughn and Sabrina?Lord_Banks wrote:All I can say to forced rivals is love is weird, but I agree, Marvelous, I almost said Natsume by accident...
