You need 80 to break the spell on the neverending staircase. And only Mario can go up the staircase.

The one at the end of the game that leads to Bowser. Didn't you play this game on N64?

I have all 150. :) It helps that I played the N64 one over a dozen times. The prize at the top of the castle is even more worthless than the N64 version...

You know on the N64 Version, you don't need 70 to get past the neverending staircase? I wonder if it's possible on this one. Anyway, to do it, you need to do long jumps backwards. After a while, the game kinda glitches and Mario will do multiple long jumps at once and he'll keep doing so until he reaches the top. There was a video on GameFAQs... I tried it out, and it works. The lowest number of stars you can get before you can get to Bowser in the Sky is apparently 31, as there's a trick to get past even the 50 Star Door. I don't know what it is, though...
