Thanks for all the responses, guys! It's good to see I'm not the only one disappointed by this.
lumiina: Deadlines didn't seem to matter when it came to them pushing back ToTT's release to add in the 3D + Petting Game. Personally, like Nice1220 said, I wouldn't have minded an extra wait for them to add in the feature. That is IF the 3DS cartridge can hold all of it. With all the features that are in this game, I'd be surprised if there was actually space left over.
Yes, I still stand by the fact that despite the 3D capabilities of the 3DS, the cartridge, while being able to hold more than it's predecessor, still holds less than a disc. > >
But really, what all of this boils down to is: What's the deal with the standard looking kids?
Were they lazy about it?
Did they just not want to do it? If this is the case, then I'm sorely disappointed that they didn't care to.
Was it a data issue?
Was it a deadline issue?
Whatever the case, I hope the company learns about this and applies it to their future installations to the game.
I, for one, like to immerse myself into the gameplay. Being a dark-skinned girl myself, and having the desire to marry a dark character, it just won't be the same feel if my child is standard and I just say they're adopted or "think" that the child got some kind of crazy genetic mix up from ancestors. = 3 =

I'm pretty upset about it too though. I would've been willing to wait if it meant adding the feature. I'm white, but my husband is Japanese. Our kids won't have blonde hair and blue eyes like the boy in the game. I wish the kids were more realistic. I miss the realism from AWL of kids developing their own personalities, and other villager's kids aging. If there were a game that combined all of that, including aging (just the kids until they are teens, because I don't want my character to die), in-depth personalities and a genetics system, I would buy a wii (or wii-u?) for that. In fact, I'm considering buying one in the future (maybe after I move to Japan) just to play AP, because the genetics system looks good.Kuro Ningyou wrote:Thanks for all the responses, guys! Now, I'm not saying this is the reason, but Japan does thinks of itself as a homogenized country (even though there are many races there, many of whom face prejudice). In anime, often characters have crazy colored hair and often are pale skinned, and even though these characters may look white to Westerners, they are often Japanese. Take for instance the main girl in East of Eden, she's Japanese, yet has red hair similar to mine. The creators weren't sensitive about race when creating this game. After all, this franchise was male based for the longest time. Seems to be the same for color of skin.
But fact is, you can't carry a console around. If this game were on the Wii, what would I play on my long flight to Japan? I would rather see something sacrificed in the game in order for the children to be more diverse according to who you marry and what your character looks like. What would I sacrifice? Perhaps some of the festivals, or less types of animals. I don't need an alpaca, sheep and lama. Nor do I need a cow, yak and jersey cow. They basically do the same thing.

I guess Celka and I will be a childless couple. P:
The kid can kinda pass for Allen though.

Yeah it sucks. I'm going to marry Celka and I want my kid to have dark skin like his! Luckily my character is going to have pale skin, so it's not impossible for the kid to be pale were this a real-life situation. But I'll still have to give her either brown or blonde hair depending on if I have a boy or a girl. How lame. What's the point of giving us customization if it's just going to make our families look weird half the time?
This isn't anything new. MC's in the past have always had weird match ups depending on what gender you pick, who your spouse was, and what gender your child was. Like in IoH where Mark can marry Lanna and pop out a brunette kid. In DSC, if you picked Skye/MT bachelors, there was always the chance you could've gotten a red head child (Nami/Gustafa's kid) or one that didn't look remotely like either parents (including you). In GB, you got a brunette son and blonde daughter regardless of which MC you picked or which candidate you chose.Anonymous Fish wrote:Yeah it sucks. Nothing new; they just merely stepped up their game of "awkward family-tizing" now. Honestly, though, I think Marvelous just chose the lazy route or this is their way of still promoting the (crappy) MCs.
Ah that makes me nostalgic for my son in AWL, I had my MC marry Nami and they had a beautiful blue eyed red haired boy. He was like a mini-Nami, so cute.
It's really a let down about the whole child thing and lack of genetics but I can't wait to interact with them and see them grow. It's been a while since I last saw that happen in a HM game.

Personally, I don't really care about my child not looking like me. It's too minor a thing to spoil a great-looking game, and I don't see why it would need to be moved to Wii for that one thing...don't have a kid at all if bothers you. Remember, this is the same series which had a cast's descendants from 100 years later look exactly the same, had the same names (out of Japan), had the same jobs, and the same technology. Your kids not looking like you is easily believed compared to that.
Just my opinion though.
Plus, the artwork for the kid is nice.

Making kids that look exactly like you no matter what with the customize system? Beyond too much data to jam into a DS game. They're already pushIng it to the limit.
Besides, the designs for the kids are excellent anyway. Who cares if they defy the laws of genetics, they're pixels on a screen for crying out loud!
Not that we want them looking like OUR character, we want to look a bit more like the spouse -_-PrincessofDusk wrote:^This.BTNFan wrote:Personally, I don't really care about my child not looking like me. I would love to have a red/white haired son or daughter with blue eyes.
But I already know my kids will look like my character slightly because I don't use out-there hair colors. Mostly black.
100 year descendants? What a bad excuse to not use the word "remake" -_-
That's all it was anyway. the original was better.

Princess: The thing about the data is exactly the reason why I mentioned it would be better for the Wii especially with the extended features. Plus, I wouldn't mind having another Harvest Moon game for the Wii.
Ducki: I never really have "out there" hair colors either. Usually brown or black for me when the options present itself.
Well, we can forget about HM games coming on consoles, Marvelous has stated that they're going to focus on HM games for handhelds (3DS and Vita). Go play ToT and AP if you want to play a Wii HM game. So, better get use to playing HM games on the 3DS. It's a powerful machine, I'm getting sick of seeing this.
Who cares if your kid doesn't look like either one of you. Remember HMDS? Jack and Keira could have Muffy's kid. Brown + Black = Blonde? If this is deal breaker for you, then skip ANB. Frankly, you'd be missing out on a great HM game. There hasn't been a good HM game on a handheld in a LONG LONG LONG time.
Building stuff doesn't look appealing? Might as well go back to the request board. Honestly, the building stuff in ANB seems like an upgraded version of the request board, only you don't have a deadline or have to wait a season to get another building plan.
All right, that's my two cents. Now could we stop complaining about the little things of this game and just enjoy it? ANB seems like its going to be the best HM game in years.

People can complain if they want. Personally, I do find it a little annoying myself, but people are complaining because it is an issue. I think they could have at least palette swapped some of the kids to match the bachelors/rettes. While I do not know much about making games, I don't think it would have been impossible. They did it in the DS games, afterall...
I agree that it isn't an issue that should keep people from playing the game, but I don't think anyone in the thread is planning on not playing the game because of it. It's an annoying issue, but not game breaking. I think everyone gets that. And, it seems like most people plan on playing the game, regardless.
I do agree that this game looks like the best in years, though. I'm looking forward to it, especially for the dating system. I like the cast this time. All of the characters seem pretty interesting. =)
