You press B to jump and you can jump anywhere in the game, but to cross rivers you need to use the jumping mushrooms or stepping stones. The jumping can be a bit of a hit and miss as you need to point the direction and jump close enough to the mushroom and stepping stone to get across. If you're not close enough or not pointing the direction you can end up jumping in the air.
You can't jump down from cliffs, only when you're close to a normal distance, like a 30cm jump. So there's no insane short cuts you can take.
The jump is useful in the animal barn as the alpacas like to come up to you and kiss you, which is cute but you can get jammed in a corner. You can jump over all your animals, so long as there's a space to go to.
Well, I think it's a kiss. They chase after you once their hearts are high enough. When they find you they bleat and let out a little . It's really cute but they can trap you if you have heaps of them. You need to jump to escape, or push them out of the way.

(I actually miss GrB's jumping, as silly and physics-defying as it was, it was really fun and I'd bounce around town instead of running)
Was so fun.
I still wish i just use the jump to get off the terrace hills around the farm without running to the ramp. It gets annoying when I am impatient.
Well jumping over really, you can't jump on them unless they're the horse, but you can totally vault over your cows and yaks. :D
There are a few times when I wish I could jump down from a cliff when there's land below. It's a but annoying at first if you're used to doing a super jump.
I used to love playing around with the jump in GrB when waiting for time to tick over. Was especially fun because it opened up new shortcuts across the rivers to the windmills. Also, the added height gave the player the ability to throw a chicken into its pen from halfway through the barn. Time saving super jumps. =)
