Differences between SI and IoH?

I want to play SI because I like the characters very much, but if it is too much like IoH, then I probably won't like it. I hated IoH.

I did not play IOH because I heard of the touchscreen controls and I didn't like the idea (also I did not yet have a DS when that game came out). But I can tell you that in SI you are no longer forced to use the touchscreen for everything. Also no drawing in random villagers and such. Pretty much everyone who's going to be part of the town is there from the beginning (a couple arrive later but not much). You raise various islands by finding enough sunstones to do so, and the goal is of course to raise them all. You could try checking out the hm8 site here at fogu and see if the story appeals to you.

I will say SI is a lot more complicated than GrB or ToTT if you've played those. You have to count sun and water points if you don't want your plants to die, etc etc....

Are things too expensive? And, are people's hearts hard to raise? Because in Winter I had no more than three hearts with anyone.
And no, I have not played GrB nor ToTT.

Hmmm... well some things are expensive. The greenhouse is frankly ridiculous, and so is the quality-improver machine. But those are later-game things too, so....*shrug* They give you some longer-term goals to aim for I guess.

Friendship doesn't seem too hard. You need 7 hearts with people in order to get birthday gifts from them (an awesome thing in this game) and I had no trouble getting the folks I wanted gifts from high enough to do that by Spring Year 2. 'Tis true I gave those folks gifts, but in general I only talk to people and give them gifts only on their birthdays. I would guess that the ones I did not give gifts to were around 4-5ish at that time. (it has been awhile since I played).

If you're looking for an easy/simple game, I recommend more GrB/ToTT. This one makes you work for things more. (example 255-floor mine and so on)

In SI, they introduce Will and Lily, who were not available in the other game. The islands are smaller, and it's slightly less challenging than IoH.

In IoH, doesn't everyone move away if you ignore them?

^Some people move out. But many people stay forever even if you ignore them.

Here are some differences I remember between the two:
-The plots are different
-Character dialog
-Villagers have random events. In IoH there were only Heart Events and Rival Events
-Rival Couples will not have a Rival Child
-SI has Will, Lily, and Witchkins
-Alisa has friendship events and kind of special proposal scene where she rejects you
-People notice your birthday before marriage in SI
-You can use the D-pad or the touch screen to move in SI
-You can buy things like flour and rice in SI. I IoH you had to grow/make pretty everything on your own
-There is a separate field for trees in SI
-In SI you need a certain amount of points to do things like cook a higher level dish or reach a certain level in the mine
-Chen sells some Wonderfuls right off the bat in SI
-There are some different festivals
-Heart Events work differently than they did in IoH
-You can hire the Harvest Sprites to help you do stuff
-There are more Harvest Sprites
-You can hire wild animals to find items for you
-There are new items in SI that were not in IoH
-You can get a pet cat and pig
-Pets come in two colors and you get to pick
-People wear weddings clothes when you get married
-People no longer move out if you ignore them
-Weather is set a week in advanced (I think it worked differently in IoH. But maybe it was the same :T)
-The Wonderful you get from winning a festival is decided in a different way

Uuuuh that is all I can remember right now.

All that points to SI. Or ToTT/GrB if you don't want as much work.

Do you guys consider Magical Melody and Tree of Tranquility easy? Are they more like SI or GrB/ToTT? Because MM and ToT are my fav HMs.

MM and ToT were pretty easy. And they were really enjoyable. Besides the gender bending Jamie and the speed the player walks in both.

I prefer Sunshine Islands, the controls are way easier, and the rp is better.
I liked the idea of 'moving out if you ignore them' of Island of Happiness. I don't know why, but characters that I don't like can simply move out and I wouldn't try to bring them back.

Like Gwen in magical melody. I married somebody else, and my sister kept bugging me saying I should have married her because she's pretty...
Hasta la vista, GWEN.

i know that SI has a different plot than IoH and that SI was used to clean up some of the mistakes that were in IoH but everything is so expensive!

That's true. A barn, without materials, costs like 50k g!
