@Kirie :: Leon's a spell + physical expert from what I've seen.

Ahh, neat! Well I just finished up the first storyline again, so I'm working on getting his LP up to 3 so I can bring him along. I guess I'll find out how good he is soon enough :p

And like magic, a ghost appears. Yo. You spent some time Daisuke. I'm guessing most of this info you got was from either the net or your own research of the game. Anyways, things seem interesting, now I can't wait for the game even more. (I really hope there's a localization announcement soon.) But like people have been saying over and over again, it sadly won't be announced until a while has passed.

Can't wait to know what he doesXD anyway, here's some video I found where a mage frey takes Leon and child into several caves, their attack damage is amazing, I think they're incredibly high leveledXD;;
Spoiler:
The spoiler is the video cause it has some bosses and stuff, also is it easier to be a mage in this game than the last games? for anyone who has because I love to use magic for the main characterXD

Watching more RF4 gameplay on niconico, and I noticed when Lest gave Porcoline a gift, he went "Rainboow~!!" So this makes for more evidence of his relation to Daria. Neat. :3

Well, I honestly don't use much magic right now besides healing.. but the magicky type companion characters seem to do quite a bit of damage. I'm not playing on hardmode, so it's probably different there..but I don't see any problems thus far. :D

Magic has become very viable in Rune Factory 4. (Disclaimer: I play in Hard, but everything below also applies to Normal and Easy)

Is it possible to play as a pure mage in RF4? Yes, definitely.
Is it possible to play as a pure mage in RF4 and actually get to kill bosses? Yes! (see below for a fuller account)
Is it possible to play as a pure mage in RF4 and fight with it just like martial weapons? No.
Is it possible to play as a pure mage in RF4 and expect an easy time? Easier than RF3, etc. But not an easy time.

First of all, what hasn't changed: 1) Magic usage is STILL going to make your battles semi-turn-based, 2) it still doesn't have close range attacks, 3) some enemies, including bosses, still have their own elemental weaknesses, resistances, and immunities, 4) and it will still use up a good deal of RP if you just spam it without actually hitting anything. (alternatively, spam it so you will level your element skill, meaning lower RP consumption for that element)

Now for the changes, which are just awesome: 1) A few of the magic attacks have been overhauled FOR THE BETTER. Just try out the third-rank wind magic in ANY room of enemies and you'll see what I mean. 2) Magic now levels up! No, not *just* the skill level, the magic rune itself levels up (to 10) and each level significantly increases its parameters. You can clear rooms in seconds (or literally in a second in some cases) when equipped with third-rank level 10 magic spells. 3) The dozens of staves now very significantly increase your M ATK. The lower level ones have a joke charge attack but the higher level ones are PURE DEATH. The staff 賢者の杖's full charge attack has the highest DPS in the game FLAT. No other weapon, none None NONE, can match ____hundreds of thousands____ of light damage every second this baby does. I basically used this miracle of the universe to kill literally every boss in the level 1000 sharance dungeon.

There are big drawbacks to magecraft in RF4 though: 1) First of all, even though you have 4 ability quickslots, a few of them are going to be occupied by a healing magic or two and a martial ability, leaving one or two for attack magic. This means having to open your menu to switch magic runes every time an enemy with a special weakness, resistance, or immunity pops up. Slightly annoying. 2) As stated above, magic turns enemy encounters into semi-turn-based battles. Aim -> Attack -> Dodge -> Repeat. Unless you are overleved or in lategame, expect to do slower (but not necessarily less) damage than most martial weapons. This is why I wouldn't recommend going pure mage if you want to get things done quickly. With the 4 ability quicklsots, anyone can hack and slash while raining deadly mana attacks at the same time.

Anyway I hope everyone who already has the game will consider this post and give magic a chance!

Yeah that works, I can later basically train between dual swords and mages magic until I get to a high enough levelXD When I saw the magic that one person could do in the video I linked, It looked very different to the previous gamesXD I'll probably start out on normal difficulty and move up to hard modeXD

Anyway thanks for posting that, I'll definitely want to be 1/3 dual, 2/3 magic <8D

Nah. It's more like I have a lot of info on the OP thanks to Nurse Fin and Zhang's info/translations alongside the fact I actually have the game.

@Zhang: Woah. The magic combat system seems like it's taken a more broken level.

@ Zhang - I don't think I could ever do a "pure magic" character and have fun with it, but next playthrough I'll dabble in it more than I have right now. Thanks for all the tips/information!

Wow! All the magic stuff sounds amazing! O: I love using duel blades, though, and slashing things up! >:)
Do you use magic often Zhang, or have a full mage character?

Too true I guess XD. Still can't wait for there to be a localization announcement (though if I had the money and the knowledge I'd have probably had the game by now and a pikachu 3DS XL to boot from trying to find it on a site that does imports) Oh well, can't have everything. As for questions about the game, I personally don't have any as of yet since it's only been a japanese release so far and I have all the info I need memorized in my head thus leaving me at a gray area until the game gets localized and I find what problems I might encounter.

RF4 is the first RF where I've actually used a lot of magic. Still primarily a fist fighter, but right now wands are my secondary weapon. They're kinda fun.
