What do you normally do in your first year of playing?

I usually get married in the first or second year. It's easy to marry early in newer games, but older games were more difficult for me to do that.
I like to raise all my friendships and make some money to prepare for later years. I try to get as much as I can done such as getting new house extensions and if there's a clear goal in the game I want to finish that as soon as possible.

I look up who I need to befriend for whatever benefits that way I can start gifting them from the very beginning. For ANB though, collecting/hoarding was top priority -.- I wanted to finish the town restorations as soon as possible D:
Marriage really interests me
but then I'd read some Random Events that can only take place in a later year & the characters involved could not be married in order to see the event, so now I'm very careful about rushing the marriage thing cause I love Random Events x]

Depending on game I am usually married in year one or early year two if it takes awhile to unlock the one I'm aiming for (gill, harvest king, wizard) and halfway or 1/4 the way through the storyline unless a marriage candidate (the harvest king) takes a long time to unlock or like in ds cute after I got married I rage-quit because it was so long.ds and ds cute cause people to rage quit frequently. Gotta love games that make you rage quit frequently.
I usually always take my time with it. I don't pick marriage candidates usually in the first year, although I do befriend them all to see who I like best from dialogue and any events I can see with them. I'll also be giving gifts to anyone else that I need to give gifts to, but I focus soley on my farm and money usually in my first year. If there's any special bachelors/bachelorettes that require a longer time to unlock then I wont marry at all until I've unlocked and befreinded them too - sometimes I'll wait until I beat the story to even get married too. Basically, my first year is spent on expanding, making money and befriending. But I don't rush it.
The only exception was AP where the game goes quite slow, so I was married by winter of my first year. However, I want to do the new game + (which I haven't done yet) so I was focusing on expanding my farm more, getting more animals, getting kids, etc.
