On my first playthrough my choices on who to pair with who were half "ok I want the kid to have this skill" and half "trolololol this support is hilarious 8D" Some were more aesthetic - I liked the way the pairing fought in battle but not neccesarily the actual supports. Ricken x Panne was a major example of this - I loved the idea of the squishy wizard kicking « Mr.Gourmet's hat » with a giant bunny by his side, but the supports were pretty... eh.
Lon'qu x Lissa was one of my favorites, and Libra x Tharja was pretty interesting too. I went the default pairing with Chrom x Sumia because I didn't want to have to think about either of them haha. I had my MU marry Lucina to get the gamebreaker Morgan... and daaaamn did she break everything. She pretty much murdered everyone in the endgame - I scarcely needed the rest of my army or the MU/Chrom!
Sully x Stahl were married first (They're SOOOO cute together). Some pairings were intentional (Lon'qu x Lissa, Libra x Tharja, Cherche x Henry), and some came randomly, like Miriel and Gaius. I still ship them hardcore... soooooooo cute :D
All in all, pretty meandering. Now I'm switching all of the pairings up in my female file~

So just now, I was playing the new SpotPass map. I was using Morgan, and I didn't have anyone paired up with him so I was having him stand next to Lissa and Stahl, who were paired up, so he would have a partner if he was attacked. An enemy with the Astra skill (makes you hit the enemy five times with half the damage each hit) came up and attacked Morgan, and Astra triggered, and Stahl guarded Morgan every time. I had never had Morgan fight with Stahl before, and while I know that the chance for two characters who can't get support convos with each other to guard each other in battle is higher than two characters who can get support convos together (but who haven't reached a rank C) to guard each other, it's still hilarious that that happened.

I have Lon'Qu and Panne. I liked their supports and it makes Yarne a total badass barbarian, too.
edit: mostly the supports influenced my choice. I don't care much about specific skills.

For pairings, I mostly did it a bit of hair color choices, headcanon fitting, and good supports.
Spoiler:
Lon'qu x Cordelia was a bit random, but probably one of the best choices I did in my first playthrough.
Virion x Olivia was a bit random, but I think it was a bit of headcanon fitting, since if anyone is Inigo's father, it should be Virion. The two make a great couple, so I didn't mind it.
Stahl x Cherche was random, but a good pairing.
Ricken x Maribelle was chosen because of story events, but I had heard of good things before hand, so I kind of planned it.
Henry x Panne was random, but I do somewhat regret it. I like Yarne with the white tuff of hair, though.
Frederick x Sumia I chose based on supports, and they are probably my favorite for each.
Vaike x Miriel was chosen based on story events, but I did really love their pair.
Kellam x Lissa was random, and I do wish I switched it to Donnel x Lissa instead.
Libra x Tharja was done out of the want for a blonde Noire.
Chrom x Sully was chosen based on me liking his supports with her quite a bit.
Spouse wise, I chose Gaius cause he was attractive and hilarious. I love his supports and whatnot.

For the Ist gen pairings, at the beggning I paired everyone with the first support I liked ( which made me regret some stuff) and later on tried to match up people to who their kids would be, before realising that not evevryone can date everyone.
Spoiler:
ChromXSumia -probably will change to either Sully or Maribelle
SullyXDonnel - I want to pair him with Lissa~
VirionXOlivia - Same reason staed above
NahXHenry - I want to change this, but its a « Harvest Goddess » backup.
GregorXMiriel - I need to find a good support for Miriel....
MaribelleXRicken - Same reason stated above
VaikeXLissa
StahlXCordelia - I kinda want to put her with Virion so they can be both in love with other people together
Lon'quXCherche
KellamXTharja
PanneXLibra
When I was done, the only boys left were Gaius, Frederick, and all of the 2nd gen kids. I really liked Gerome and Gaius, but I wanted Morgan as a tactician so I married Yarne, not remembering that being a taguel is herreditary. Probably won't marry him next time.
I think I'll either go for Gaius, Donnel, Henry,
Spoiler:
Basilio
or Brady if the supports are good
Happy Birthday Nah!

Okay, so I have a quick question regarding supports.
On my second file, I'm thinking of pairing Henry up with either Olivia or Sumia. I heard that he and Olivia had really good supports in the Japanese version, but considering the fact that Henry's character was pretty flanderized in the English version I get the feeling they won't be as meaningful (but I don't want to look them up because I don't want to spoil myself). I heard that Henry's supports with Sumia are really funny too, but I do want them to have a degree of actual, serious romance if I pair them up. I already paired up Chrom with Sully and I don't want to marry Sumia to Gaius because GaiusxMaribelle asdfghjkl, and I married her to Frederick on my last file and I want to do something different.
tl;dr who did you guys think had the better supports with Henry, Olivia or Sumia?

I can't talk about Sumia (haven't gotten her supports with Henry), but I rather enjoyed Henry x Olivia. White haired Inigo looks really bad, imo, but the pair itself is really cute.

I haven't paired Henry with Olivia yet but his supports with Sumia are adorable! It is pretty funny and crazy but the S support is really cute and romantic.
And yeah, don't do SumiaxGaius. It's by far her worst support imho.

The only reason I married OliviaxHenry in my file was because I was pretty much married to their JP support, and had to keep them together in my game. But you were dead on about the English version. NoA got a lot of things right, but not these two. Not only did NoA manage to take away everything I liked about the supports (namely, character development for Henry), but they also changed Henry's backstory and had Olivia make rude assumptions/remarks about Henry that were really off-putting, and definitely not present in the original. Some people that didn't read the JP version liked it anyway, but it's basically reads like a completely different couple.

This was my main gripe. -_-
I'm trying to determine which kids to pair off together now....

Spoiler:
Do you only get an ending quote and CG from your spouse if you let Chrom seal Grima? I sacrificed myself to kill her and I didn't get any...
