My trees disappeared?

Hi guys. I'm new to the forum, but I've been playing Harvest Moon SI for about a year (two if you count playing on someone else's chip). I've recently got Tree Island and planted 5 seeds, and one day one of my seeds disappeared (this was during Fall). And then during Winter, one of my tree saplings disappeared as well. Doesn't it end up in a stump if it died? I'm wondering if this is a glitch. There hadn't been any typhoons to take away my trees. The two just vanished.
