Share your quick tips and hints!

So, I was replaying HM:ANB, and I realised that since everybody has their own playstyle, maybe we all have little hints and tips we've discovered in the game that just make farm life a little easier that other players might not have realised. This thread's for sharing those little things we've found :)

I'll start things off - these are probably pretty obvious, but they can make things a whole lot easier.

1. Easy mining

The things you dig up in the mine aren't set at the start of the day - they're set when you start digging. Need a particular ore? Save in front of a mining spot and dig. If you don't get what you're looking for, reload the save and try again. You can do this in front of each mining spot to get the highest yield of what you need. It's a little dishonest, but hey, sometimes finding silver is a pain!

2. Get the Farm Bell as soon as possible.

In my opinion, the Farm Bell is far superior to having pets herd your animals - you don't have to sit through a cutscene, and you can decide for yourself when the animals graze and go into the barn. It's also a lot less expensive than buying pets!

Raise Neil's FP to 15,000 to get the blueprint for the Farm Bell - eggs and fodder are cheap and easy ways to do this. Next, you need silver and jade, which you can get more easily from the above method. Lastly, the Bell, which I believe Neil gives you when you buy a cow.

Put the completed Farm Bell right next to your house so you can get your animals grazed as soon as dawn breaks, and your pets can enjoy the easy life!

That's all I can think of for now. Do you guys have any quick tips you wanna share?

Well, here are the ones I can think of right off the bat:

1. May seem obvious, but hoard everything! A lot of things, if not all of them, are used in the construction of the Town, or in Blueprints, or in something - I mean, Weeds are used for some Gardening Items, I believe, and I'm quite sure that the Witch Princess likes Barn Dirt. Although, don't turn your Branches or Rocks into Material Stone or Lumber just yet - or at least, not until Rebecca comes to town with the handy-dandy Supply Shed for you.

2. Fish a lot! Maybe this is just me, but I've found fishing to be the most effective way of making money in Harvest Moon, as for whatever reason I'm not much into trapping. I'm now I think at the second-highest or highest rank of fisher, and with the fish I'm catching (averaging around twenty a day) and making into Bouillabaisse, I'm making around 40,000 G a day or so. I'd advise it, anyways - I'm sure there are other, much better, methods.

3. Befriend Hana! She's easy to befriend, and likes all fish and all butterflies, so it shouldn't be too hard to find nice gifts for her. When you raise her friendship to 40,000, I believe, Kosaburo (her husband) comes to town and you get access to the Bait Shop.

4. Save Honeybees and especially Honeycomb! I remember on my playthrough of the game, at the very start of it I sold all my collected Honeycomb and all my Honeybees because at that point my thoughts were something like, "Wow, these sell for 75 G! I should sell them all and make a lot of money!" or something like that. It really wasn't a lot, comparatively. And I found myself regretting it when the second Town Restoration Plan came around. So save those especially, as many as you can.

I can't really think of anything else at the moment, so there we have it! Don't be afraid to ask for help on the forums - though if you're looking to find an item, post in the Trading Thread - you'll be more likely to get replies, besides.

Good luck to those starting out, and those who have been playing for a while as well!

Yes SAVE HONEYCOMB. Had to wait until fall to get some!

Also fertilize and save your crops for when you get a seed maker.

1. Like already mentioned, hoard everything except insects (except the honeybees - keep those too ^_^). You may be a little pressed for pennies at the beginning, but you'll be chugging right along once you unlock the wifi field, if you choose to get money that way. On my next play through, I'm not going to do wifi at all.

2. I will go the opposite way as the OP and say to get a pet as soon as possible. Yeah the farm bell is nice since you can control when your animals go in and out, and there is no cutscene. The way I play makes that inconvenient, though. I have so many animals and crops that it takes me a long time to get done with farmwork, which puts me out a little late to do my foraging. It's really late by the time I come back, and if I put the animals back then, they'd get angry with me. So I just let the pets do it for me while I'm gone foraging! The cutscenes are annoying as all get-out, but I had a routine every morning that allowed me time to leave the farm at about 5 minutes till 7, wait until 7, and then come back in after the cutscene. It worked out pretty well. c:

3. Fish! This game has so much to do that I always forget to fish. I'm currently trying to get the fishing recipes, and it's a pain. I probably would have gotten them by now had I been fishing a little bit here and there along the way. Fish are a good source of income, too! Especially if you turn them into grilled fish. I'd be careful about that, though, some of the larger fish's value actually goes down if you turned them into a cooked dish.

4. Befriend everybody - ESPECIALLY IROHA. Dear « Harvest Goddess », I cannot stress this enough. Befriend Iroha as soon as possible because she gives you the wonderful tool upgrade blueprints. Befriend Neil to get the farm bell and a couple other things, and befriend Emma and Hanna to get some other recipes/blueprints as well.

5. Don't upgrade past the gold watering can if you're not that serious about crops. Gold is a nice level. With gold, you water a field at a time. With the next level up, I belieeeeve you can water 9 fields at a time if your fields are 3x3 and if you stand in -exactly- the right spot. This, however, completely drains your can after one use. This wouldn't be a problem if it were like previous games and you could "charge" up your can to the previous levels, but it's not - you either water one square or the whole nine fields without any in-between.

6. Give treats to your animals early to kick-start production level! If you level them up quickly, you could have a fewer number of animals but have the same production as if you had a lot more. Don't be like me and get too many. Maaaaajor drain of stamina.

7. Fertilize your crops! Since I'm cheap, I always just fertilize a single crop (the top right one). Since you won't have the seed maker right away, just keep the leveled crops in your fridge. I actually keep all of my crops until I get a good hoard of them in the fridge.

8. In your first spring, ship 30 potatoes! This will help you unlock the foilage festival earlier and allow you to move through the town restoration plans more quickly. If you choose to not do wifi, then it may not be crucial that you do this, as yam seeds are not sold until year 2. There is a way around this, however ;D If you make your birthday before fall, you can save before somebody who gives seeds as a present gives you their gift (if you've befriended them enough, so you need to work on that!). If it's not yam seeds, then just reload ^_^

1) Befriend Iroha!
She likes simple items like rocks so up her friendship to get tool blueprints.

2) Upgrade axe before other tools!
Once your axe is upgraded you can chop down trees and sell lumber for much needed gold. It's also a necessity for restoring your town.

3) Buy those treats!
I waited to start my animals on treats and I'm kicking myself now. I especially wish I had started my sheep on them because I need the wool for clothes.

4) Impregnate animals early!
I didn't want to loose the money from animal products, but now I have to wait to get my suffolk sheep and brown alpaca :( This really messed up my plans for pregnancy in the game.

5) Give wifi a try!
I didn't realize all wifi had to offer and now I'm kicking myself because I'm rolling in all of the wool I finally have~

Everything stated above but also

1. Don't go on too many trips if you dont have a lot of money! (Unless you have to for Town plan things)
2. Get the speedy tools, they usually take a lot of energy away if you don't! I remember being out of energy for mining if I brushed, milked, and if I sheared I didn't have any energy at all!
3. Upgrade your house quickly! You get the shower and bathroom that replenish your energy and it is quicker to do that than to do my #2 tip
4. Befriend Dunhill to get an Alarm Clock! The Alarm Clock lets you sleep and your energy replenishes and if you have nothing better to do you can save a few minutes while waiting for festivals!

Hey all I've learned quite a few new tips for making farm life a bit more simple, thanks. :-| One thing I had a problem with in the game was loosing stamina early in the day taking care of my crops and animals, however I realized that two 5 star fried or boiled eggs do the trick nicely when you are in need of stamina. To make this process simple I gave my chickens a ton of treats so that they are at production level of 4 and keep about 20 or so fried eggs in my inventory at all times so I never have to worry about passing out and going to the doctors. Thanks everyone for all the helpful tips hope my tip helps.

^Oh oh! That's actually something I meant to put. Stamina recovery.

When I was new in the game, I started out using mushrooms to make either mushroom salad or mushroom soup. It doesn't recover much stamina, but the mushrooms are easy to find. You can use any type of mushroom to make those.

When I got further in the game, I got to where I made pudding out of 5 star eggs and milk. That helped stamina a lot!

When I got to the point where money wasn't an issue, I would go to Klaus and have him give me a shot for 1000g that completely restored my stamina.

If you need money then get lots of fish using fish traps and cook them into grilled fish. They sell for at least 440g each and you often get 4-5 in one go. The traps reset every 30 seconds so if you leave them in place and go from one to another you can easily make a lot of money in a few in game hours.

Ah, yes - another good cooking dish that you can sell for quite a fair amount of money is Pudding. When you get some fairly high-star Milk and some fairly high-star Eggs, make Pudding and sell it - I think that it sells for at least 5000 G if it's four stars, though I'm not quite sure of the precise amount.
