Is what is inside an ore stone predetermined? Or, if I smashed it, didn't get what I wanted and reloaded the game - might it be something else the second time I smashed it?

Yes, you can keep reloading and you can get something different but sometimes it takes a while.

Thank you! I need an amethyst, so I'm trying to work out how best to get it.

The only thing is, if you reload your game, you'll need to do everything that you did on that day over and over again since you only can save your game when you go to bed.

Then the best option would be to start the day opening the ore stone before anything else.
