I'm not sure if this is correct or anything but my guess is that 'k' stands for a thousand, but I'm not really sure if I'm right or anything.

Yes, whenever you see "k" in that situation, it indicates that you multiply the number in front of it by 1000.
This is the reason for that whole fiasco was called "y2k," since it stood for "year 2000."
