nah it's cool! sorry, didn't mean to insinuate that it was obvious knowledge when plenty of people haven't played that game

but yeah amnesia isn't a thing for them but you only get a very vague idea of what their lives were like before the plot and it doesn't get mentioned much so it's not very invasive. which probably isn't what people want with no-amnesia protagonists admittedly. i guess even if they don't have amnesia, the writers still aim to make them as blank as possible because it's easier for them to be integrated into the plot that way. which again is terrible as far as writing goes haha.. but their writing strength is usually more in their characters which is the part that matters to me most.

i admit that i wouldn't mind if they shook things up with the protagonists though. i'd love if we could play as a different race or even choose which race to play as or something but well

Honestly mostly what I care about is personality in MCs vs amnesia. So for example, I love RF4 and they have my second favorite MCs (Raguna will always by my fav just cause RF1 got me into RF and HM), because even if they have amnesia, they have a lot of personality.

Plus imho, it's harder to write workable romances for multiple characters with stronger personality characters. But I like it a lot. So the amnesia in RF4 didn't bother me as much as it did in others.

Now it really DID bother me in RF2:

You didn't come across that way, don't worry!

Yeah, get that it's easier to do it that way but it's lazy. It would be more unique if they surprised us and didn't use amnesia for the next game. I don't hate it; I just think it would be nice to get to know the character better.

Oh that would be really cool if we could be a different race. Or perhaps the protagonist could be an elf or a dwarf? Personally I would like them to focus on the design of our children more. I know that it would take more work but I would really like it if they would make the children look like our spouse instead of giving each person the same generic child design regardless of who you marry.

@Melody Muse

That bothered me too! I really wanted to find out what happened >_< But it was fun having a second generation too.

You know what I would like, an actual Rune Factory that goes beyond the HM restrictions and tries to embrace a whole new legacy. The first Rune factory was a HM spinoff allright, so it made sense that the game was for all ages, without killing monsters, and without slaying human enemies, or lives at stake.
Now we are half a decade into the series, and we still get the same old tale that for some magical reason all the weapons are imbued with this "retornen" nonsense (and they don't even bother with mentioning that it in the game themselves most of the time). The franchise supposedly separated from Harvest Moon, but it seems the only reason to do that was to shorten the name of the games.

I am surely not wrong when I say that most of the RF players (particularly the ones who jumped from HM to RF) be them male or female, are teenage or young adults. I am not talking about making RF a mature game with blatant cursing and suggestive barely clothed females. I am talking about RF players being mature enough to enjoy a game in which their character would face the necessity to kill creatures to survive, to fight and kill human enemies to protect their beloved ones, in which the character would be able to take the decision to sacrifice permanently one of their monster companions in order to win a fight.

I mean... a lot of games that don't have their origins in Harvest Moon also don't do those things. I suppose it would be interesting, but it's also just not much in line with the general tone of the series, and if the RF has a lighter tone to it then as someone who enjoys darker stuff too, I'm okay with that.

Aside from which, you kill monsters in Zelda and it looks more or less that same. Hit them with the pointy thing enough times and they vanish. It never felt more or less serious to me fighting common mons in either of those games, although the stakes tend to be higher for the overall plot in a Zelda game.

kyle doesn't tell anyone because he's a jerk who thinks everyone will just move on if he doesn't say anything. « What The Eggplant » kyle you had us all worried

i agree, i'd like to see unique children designs and personalities potentially. even just palette swaps like they did in ToD would be a nice start

i don't think adding actual killing just for the sake of it adds anything to a story or game though. it doesn't make things more mature, it doesn't just automatically make things deeper or more philosophical, and it certainly isn't some revolutionary thing to do either? it's not going to be the deciding factor on whether or not RF is just an HM spinoff or not, like that's just kinda silly..

retornen is actually an interesting part of the series because it adds the whole bit of where do monsters come from and why are they here? they have their own world, but suddenly through some rift they ended up in this one. unfortunately we don't get a lot of elaboration on it, but it seems like with rf4, we got some more info on it and perhaps we'd get more if the series continued. the RF lore does make small progressions with each game, they're just a little hard to recognize sometimes

and about sacrificing monsters... i don't see why that seems like a necessary theme to add? what value does that have? sure, it can be explored in other stories, but i don't feel like it would add anything meaningful to RF... like you can add elements into the game that force you to make meaningful decisions without it being about killing. i think it's a misconception that death and killing add depth to stories...

and besides... [rf4 spoilers]

does ethelberd not technically die at the end of rf4 or am i just imagining this wrong?

That's the point. You kill enemies in Zelda, hell, you kill enemies in Mario games for Christ sake...I just believe a reboot of the Rune Factory franchise is sorely needed, and could even go as far as to put the series "on the map"...keep the addictive gameplay, keep the charming characters, keep the waifu/husbando simulator, but try move the series into a new bolder direction without the fear of traumatizing kids because you just killed a feral beast with your sword. I'm talking about giving the Rune Factory games a real opportunity to impress the world, a chance to believe on itself, to believe it CAN be impressive, and go far and beyond anything the HM games have done, to prove to the world and the finicky and puerile Nintendo fans that it is a franchise as valuable to have on their systems as Zelda or Fire Emblem.

I see what you're getting at but I don't think that the Rune Factory series will ever go in that direction. There was already some criticism about the swearing. (Personally I like that the characters swear on occasion) When I attack the monsters in Rune Factory they disappear so it seems like I am killing them anyway. I don't think the game needs gore to make it a better game. RF is unique, it doesn't have to be like Zelda or Fire Emblem.

ay, buddy you're killin me here. i guarantee you the reason rune factory was doomed to obscurity was not that instead of being vague about the fates of the enemies you defeated like in legend of zelda or mario, they tried to consider what would happen and assign reasoning to it

rune factory started out aimed at a pretty niche market, had very unpolished mechanics, was not a first party series, and it didn't offer the option to be male or female until pretty late into its life span. the last thing doesn't seem like it'd be a big deal, but if you look at the sales of ToD and RF4 compared to the other games you'll see a difference.

I love the RF games, and I'm still pretty hopeful that there will be new additions to the series (hopefully for the 3DS).

There's some news about it with XSeed trying to release RF4 into Europe, via eShop. Apparently, it's still in progress. Here's a link to one of the news source.
http://www.siliconera.com/2014/10/03/xs ... ndo-eshop/

Basically, the company was able to hire everyone from the Rune Factory development team, except for the head programmer. However, it seems they have some people to fill in where they left off and testing how it goes. If it all works out well, we may be able to see a new Rune Factory game.

In addition to that, I remember reading an article (forgot where) saying they didn't want to release sequels for a game right after another. I understand what they're saying and their intentions with giving the franchise a break now and then. There's still a chance though... Fingers crossed.

Nah, the worst part about Kyle is that he
Spoiler:
actually used his own family so his plan could work... o_o Before he leaves he said he remember why he came to the village and why he had to build a school here. Hoping that his kid will beat the dungeons...At least his marriage is legit. If he hadn't had amnesia he would marry whatever to produce a kid, lol.

I really hope they don't try "something new" with the RF games.... because that's basically why RFF and RFO are so lacking, with the Runey System being a pain and the "wand farming" in RFToD, imho. Don't get me wrong--I don't mind seeing series change and grow... I feel like ANB's awkward changes were needed to make CNW/SoS so great (I'm playing the Japanese version). So if RF needed that type of change, I'm fine with it.

I mean, I feel like RF4 hit all the right notes. And the reason the monsters vanish has been explained over and over in the games with the Forest of Beginnings stuff, and how all weapons/tools in Norad, due to the metals, send them back there. I like that aspect because it explains how you're not making species extinct, whereas other games it's like "where are all these goombas/soldiers/etc coming from???".

But I feel like when RF has done it, as I mentioned above, it just hasn't really grown correctly when it's tried something very new, except for how the handheld games have expanded. I really think RF4 is the best in the series mechanically, and I honestly think RFToD is the worst. So I really don't want some gritty massive reboot. I don't think every game needs some gritty aspects to it. (For example, Twilight Princess is my least favorite Zelda game, and I feel a good example of how things can go too gritty/dark/over the top way too easily.)

I still want RF to be more deep and more adult than HM (or at least, Natsume's bowdlerizing of HM), but I also don't want it to get gritty for the sake of being gritty, if that makes sense.
