RF4 Taking people to fight with you

So I have tried taking many different villagers to come fight with me in dungeons but none of them do anything? Am I doing something wrong? It looks like they have weapons already, but do you have to supply better weapons to them or something?

Are you going up to enemies and fighting them? I notice the villagers usually attack only if you initiate a fight.

Yeah you can give them better weapons. It's been forever since I when out with anyone I usually use my monster so this might not be completely accurate sorry :( .
So you upgrade their weapons by simple giving them the new weapon like any other gift. You do NOT get the old weapons back when you give them a new one so be careful. You can view what weapons they're currently using by looking at their status sceen and pressing L I believe (it says what button it is on the top screen if that's not right. I'm not sure if the townsfolk start with weapons but you can check their equipment to find out.
As I said earlier, I tend to use monsters a lot more than people since I find them more useful. I took Kiel with me as a healer until the end of the second story arc. I think their LP and FP go up if you take them in your party so you should take them in your party but maybe not into battle, like just walk them around town (but I'm not sure that it does sorry again :( it's been forever since I had to raise characters FP and LP)
I hope this helped though! :)

What kind of enemies are you trying to fight? If it looks like they're holding a weapon when you recruited them then they should attack (even without you hitting something, Vishnal loves doing that for me). Maybe the enemies are spell casters and out of their range? I don't think you need to give them a weapon, I at least don't remember doing that for them.

Another thing that could have happened is if you gave them an order to stand by. If they're just standing there and not moving, try talking to your party members and issue an order (like stay close). They shouldn't automatically standby but you can try giving them one to see if it'll knock them out of whatever is making them not attack.

Sometimes it just takes them a while to attack. They like to just hang out and get smacked around a little bit before they realize that they should hit back.

Some characters are better at fighting them others it seems (at least to me)

Good fighters: Forte, Doug, Porco (believe it or not) any of the monster humans (ie. Dolly, Leon, Dylas) except for Amber I'm not sure if she is good or not. Barrett and Raven are also pretty good.

Not so good: Margaret (it's not that she doesn't fight it's more that she is very weak) same with Xaio Pai although she is stronger than Margaret. Kiel is good at magic but not much else. Jones is a great healers but not much fighter, his wife Nancy is a stronger fighter than he is (so she is a little bit of both a fighter and a healer which is nice)

The more you bring them on adventures the stronger they get. However I've also noticed that you sometimes have to be almost standing on the bad guys before your partner notices them. They will get a big :!: if they notice the enemy and that's when they will (sometimes) attack.

I haven't tried everyone (except for those on the list) so it's up to you to see who you think works best for you. These are all my personal opinion from fighting with them in my party.

I'm not sure, but maybe if you don't have a weapon equipped yourself, they won't attack?
I assume their reaction time is slow, though. My sister's wooly attacks like once every ten seconds.
One thing you could do is take them to an area that they can't handle but you can handle fine. Even if they run out of HP, if you defeat even one enemy, they'll level up, and leveling up adds a tiny bit of HP to their bar. It's an easy way to do some ally grinding, and it may speed them up.

All AI has a vision field, so it's also true that you may just not be close enough, especially with physical attackers.

Vishnal's pretty good, but he always heals me when there's nothing to fight.

Half the time I bring people/monsters to fight in dungeons with me, I just use them as distractions so the monsters' attacks aren't solely focused on me. So it takes some of the brunt off. Otherwise it really depends on the type of person or monster you bring. Most of them just take a long « Mr.Gourmet's hat » time to realize something is going on and need to do something not to die

I find that the higher friend level they are with you the more they go and beat up monsters for you. Dylas is at heart-lv.32 and fights til he dies in battle. Everyone else is 'meh. why bother'.
