Sorry if someone's already posted a thread on this, but I haven't seen anything regarding diving yet.

In one of the trailer videos, it actually showed the MC swimming. Swimming freely. Which blew my mind because the only swimming I remember in any HM game I've played was the one summer festival in HM64 (I think I just dated myself. XD) And that was basically a minigame you did for that day only, once a year.

Moving on, do you dive in random spots and (maybe) come back up with something? Or are there predetermined harvesting spots, like the stumps in ANB? Or maybe I was hallucinating when I watched that video and that's not how it works at all? Any answers are appreciated.

EDIT: Another thing I just thought of... Does it use stamina to dive?

I believe you stand at the end of a dock at a river then press A which makes your character dive into the water and start swimming. Then you just use your circle pad to control where your character swims until a pops up above their head which indicates you found an item you can dive for (so yes it is random where you find items). Pressing A again makes your character dive and pick up the item.
Edit: I'm not sure about if stamina gets used up when swimming though, sorry

This is what I've heard in a playthrough video on youtube by LinandKo, so if I got something wrong anyone please correct me, but other than that I'm pretty sure this is how diving works.

I go diving everyday to 3 diff diving spots and while it does use up stamina, it uses up vey little. I can go diving in all 3 spots and only use up maybe 1/2 a heart of stamina on normal mode.

Something I noticed about diving is that after retrieving X amount of items I can no longer trigger that examination mark so I'm guessing can only collect a limited number of items everyday. Not 100% sure on that.

You must go to a dock then press B. You should swim around using the circle pad and once a '!' appears on top of you, press A. It eats up very little of your stamina so I would definitely recommend doing this during the tutorial week. It's quite easy to get things worth 200 G+ so you would have enough money when you actually start playing.

To get out of the water, just face towards the dock and press Bm

Yeah it's nice that we actually get a pretty obvious indication instead of...a dark shadow or something.

Although one question I'd like to also know is, can you go swimming/diving when it's raining or bad weather like a hurricane, or during winter?
I kinda hope the game won't let us swim in a thunder storm because that's just....really dangerous. Also it would go against that warning that pops up when you first try to swim. I'm still curious though...

We can swim during rain but not during a hurricane. I tried once in summer but a message comes up and wont let us swim. I can't recall what the message said but something along the lines about being dangerous.

Haven't really experienced an extreme weather like a hurricane but you can still swim while it's raining.

Sidenote: I completely forgot about my account here. Oops huhu.

Yes, you can only retrieve an X amount of items from a certain spot. The most I've retrieved so far (still on Spring 16) was six from the river by Eda's farm.

Kindly note that saving and reloading DOES work. For example, I'm diving to find Item A. However, I found something else. If I saved before diving and getting the exclamation point, I can reload until I get the item I want. Although, I did notice that the probability of finding an item of the same category after I reload is higher than those of different categories. What do I mean? For example, I retrieved a clam in the first round. After reloading, the probability of me getting other kinds of seafood would be higher than finding ores. I'm not sure if this is entirely accurate (or if it makes sense lol). I'll try to conduct more experiments when I have more money >w<; hihi

Hm... Since swimming uses stamina, is it possible to pass out in the water? Or would you pass out the moment you got out of the water?

I once didn't notice my stamina was super low and went diving. Passed out in the water itself so yea it's possible.

Good to know. That is a nice touch... And it leaves me with the question of who jumped in the river to fish the main character out. Hahaha.

what kind of things can you find while diving? or is it similar to the things that you could get in ToTT?

As far as I know you can get fish, squid, trash, and gems/ore from diving
