Diving?

Is there a trick to diving? I know you swim around until a red exclamation point pops up, but... is there a min/max number of things you can get? And are there more than two places to dive?
at each of the 3 diving spots. There is one on Eda's farm, one near the grain fields, and one at the bridge that goes to Fritz's farm.
