No Skills?

I guess I'm used to RF when I would have a Axe Skill and the more I use the axe the more my skill goes up and the less stamina loss when I use the axe. Is the only way to be more effective with chopping trees and such is to have upgraded axes? Nothing else helps?
I guess it may have been that way in ANB, but honestly the farming in that game was a lot different than this one. I think I like this one ... just trying to figure it out.
Bonus question: Where can I find Stone? I get Small Stone and Black Stone from the rocks in my field, but where can I find regular Stone?
Thanks!

As far as I know, upgrading tools is the only way to be more effective using them. You can buy Stone from Corona at the carpenter's. Probably at some point you will be able to find stones that will give you Stone (material) when using the hammer (as small boulders give Small Stone). I would guess the safari, but since I haven't unlocked it, I cannot confirm it.

The plain grey bigger rocks (boulders) without the mossy covering gives me stone.
