Only to see events with her. If you don't care about seeing them you don't have to befriend her ^^
1. You earn Farm degree points. For each max friendship with a character, you get 5,000 farm degree points (that's a lot). Not befriending her is a permanent waste of these points, unless you don't care about that.
2. If you don't see any point in befriending a character, then the same thing also applies to any other characters, regardless if they live or die in the end. Why should I befriend <insert any character here>? Or the bachelor/ette you don't intend to marry? They don't give you anything and don't benefit you in anyway, right?
Yeah, befriending her is optional. Some people want to get max friendship with everyone and not knowing that can upset them and force them to restart.
Not to be rude, but uh. Your point is? If you don't feel the need to befriend her, that's okay, but a lot of others, including myself, actually WANT to get those events. She's such a sweet old lady that it's a lot of fun, and even knowing that she's gonna kick it actually makes me feel a little emotional now because I've gotten attached to her. Hell, I mentally call her Granny instead of Eda. And I like it.
