Here are a few tips that might make this fight easier:
- Take a fire elemental weapon (you can also forge a strong weapon and upgrade it with a fire crystal to change its affinity) and fire magic with you because the boss's weakness is fire.
- Forge an aquamarine ring, or even better an aquamarine brooch and equip it to reduce the ice damage.
(By the way a small tip for the later levels in Rune Prana: Be prepared to take along accesories which provide elemental resistance or any type of resistance according to the situation!)
- You might have noticed that the mammoth has a few spikes on its back which will turn yellow once it's fully charged. As soon as you attack the mammoth in that state it will instantly unleash those ice spikes.
I found a way to avoid that attack but it seems to only work until the mammoth turns red (before losing half of its HP): When it is charged don't attack it with your weapon! Try to stay away as far as possible and attack it with magic so that you force it to use that charge attack while being out of range.
After it turns red you can avoid that attack if you hit it only once and dash away immediately but it won't always work...
Hope that helps.

Additionally ~
Make use of befriended monsters. Even if they're not strong enough to beat it, they can distract it for a while.
Before using his spikes attack it makes a certain sound. After hearing it you should move as far as possible from him. If you have him busy in one corner with your monsters & you move to another corner the attack shouldn't touch you. Moving around is one of the most important aspects of this fight.
Here what I did: When I saw I wasn't strong enough, I moved one screen down. There are Turnip Ghosts. I needed Turnip Miracle so badly to forge new weapons. Since they drop it so rarely & needed like 5 of them I spend almost one in-game week beating those up. Afterwards my level was high enough, sometimes it's only a weapon and some levels that will make the difference.

In my case, I just fought through the bosses until something worked. If you're having a lot of trouble, upgrading your gear is a good idea- I can usually tear through Hinoe and Kinoto (the two lions, iirc) in seconds with endgame gear, which you're beginning to have access to because Rune Prana.

You’re welcome!
Regarding the lions:
- I highly recommend taking out the blue lion first as it has the ability to heal itself and the red lion as well!
- The red lion is immune to fire attacks while the blue one is immune to wind.
Therefore try taking advantages of their weaknesses: wind is strong against earth and vice versa, fire<–>water and dark<->light. So in this battle use earth weapons/magic against the blue lion and water/ice to beat the red lion.
- Note that you can change your equipment at any time, so wear an emerald brooch (wind resistance) when fighting the blue one and later switch to the ruby brooch (fire resistance) when taking the red one out. (Although I’m not sure if the red one even attacks with fire but better be overcautious than caught unprepared.)
-Take advantage of your rune abilities (e.g. flash strike, hurricane, neko damashi etc.)
as they will usually deal more damage than “normal” attacks!
(In case you use long swords or spears the abilities “Reaper Slash” and “Flash Strike” can be useful as you might be able to hit both at the same time.)
-Also if you’re having trouble don’t forget to bring a lot of HP healing items such as magical potions and HP/RP recovering food with you.
-Lastly: As Bubbles mentioned take monsters with you since they can help you out a bit.
