Pet unassigning itself from herding?

Have you guys had this happen? Is this a lower-heart-levels thing? My dog will, after several days of chicken herding, just stop herding my two chickens. My other dog, who has way more hearts, never does this even with a full barn of animals.

Or is this because I forgot to feed it?

I believe this is because of the food. I might be wrong but I've had my two cats herding animals when I first got them at zero hearts and that kind of thing never happened. I do always make sure they had food though. Otherwise it might be a glitch in your copy of the game. Also your other dog already likes you so I'm assuming that even if it doesn't eat for as long it's love for you (I mean heart level) is making the dog still work.

I always feed the cats because I'd rather buy pet food and give it to my pets than waste 30 in game minutes taking out all my animals by hand... I never made the bell tower thing.

Try starting to feed your pet and see the unassigning stops.
