(RF4) Question About Upgrading Weapons, and What to Use

Hi! First time posting. I'm level 97 in RF4 and I've never upgraded my weapon. I have a forge and have made a couple things with it, but my forge level is still very low (lv.9). I'm confused by what materials I need to add for upgrading a weapon, and can't find any answers in-game or online.

The reason I bring this up is because when fighting Fiergaenger, my Gorgeous Lx only inflicts 15-20 points of damage. (I also have the Wind Edge, but the wind element seems to be incompatible.) I read somewhere that I need to have a weapon with a water element to counteract the fire, but I have no idea how to go about upgrading my Gorgeous Lx with water ability and I don't have anything that's already water elemented (is that a word?). If I just learned how to upgrade in general, it would help me out greatly.

I've also never used a forum like this before, so I may have issues replying or even getting back to my post. Fingers crossed I can figure it out!

tl;dr how do I upgrade a weapon to have elemental abilities, and what do I use?

Thanks so much!

Honestly, you don't really need to do much upgrading on weapons until late game. Most of the materials you try to use tend to upgrade cost a lot of RP, at least the ones that give a significant amount of buffs to the weapon. You'll do just fine if you upgrade to the next tier of weapons as the game goes on. I didn't get into it until I started doing the Sharance Maze dungeons and the 3rd Arc. I did play exclusively on Normal mode tho. :shifty:

Try to craft low level recipes so you could raise your forging skill, then move on to higher tier recipes. I didn't really bother with elemental alignments, I just kept crafting weapons with high attack power and I was able to get through the game just fine.

Adding onto my post. I guess I didn't really tell you how to upgrade in general, since it is useful later on.

If you want to know what a material will give to the weapon before you upgrade it, add the item in the material (or was it item?) slot and then add the weapon in the weapon slot. It should bring up the description menu and show what kind of alignments or buffs it'll give to the weapon. Not all items will add on to the weapon even though it says the weapon will become a level 2 sword or so on, it just raises the worth of the item. I recommend using scales or jewels to upgrade the weapons with since they tend to give out more significant buffs.

Thanks Anonymous Fish! I feel a lot better knowing I didn't screw myself up by waiting to forge. (Though I admit I was frantically trying to raise my skill all night until I read your reply. Just hit level 28 though and forged a Twin Blade. The poison is pretty effective against Fiergaenger, so it turned out all right.)

Really enjoying RF4 so far and can't wait to stick some gems in my swords and finally get some use out of that legendary scale I've left sitting at the bottom of my trunk.

Looking forward to diving more into this forum—you've been so kind and receiving! Thank you again.

'Nother tip, the great thing about RF4 is that there's no time limit on... anything, really. So take your time! Don't feel the need to grind out a skill to 99 in one day. I mean, it can be a little bit irritating to not have the skill level you need to complete an upgrade, but imo the overall experience is improved by being a little laid-back with it.

Have fun experimenting!
