Seed Maker uses

What use is the seed maker in Sunshine Islands? I know in a previous game it was necessary to level up your crops, but it doesn't seem that useful in this game. There's just the sun stone. And saving money on seeds. Is tht really it?

I'm afaraid that's really it.

Since the quality of the crops depends on the weather and growing conditions the seed maker's only purpose is to save some money and obtain one sunstone. It can come in handy though when you harvest crops & Chen's shop is closed that day.

I'd love some tips on getting better-ranked crops. Is it as simple as just leaving them un-harvested?

Basically if you water your crops every day once you shouldn't have any problems getting B or A-ranked crops. Since I'm also very picky with my quality I'm used to have some spreadsheets where I record my progress. But that's kinda troublesome, so not everybody likes it that way. Generally said if you plant outside one water point a day should be fine to get A-ranked crops. When there is too much sun you'll get B-ranked crops from time to time.

Getting S-ranked crops is more tricky, but you're absolutely right. After your vegetable is fully matured just leave it for ten days on the field so it can contininue to grow. Don't water anymore! You won't see any changes but after harvesting ten days later you should have a S-ranked crop.

I've never had S-ranked crops though because winning the Harvest Festivals requires A-ranked crops only. Maybe I will grow some for the record later but since I'm always short on money I need to sell every crop I can get. :D
