I've found your horse just tends to wander home if you leave it alone for a while. It's supposed to return to the barn after being left out for some time, so if you dismount and go inside somewhere you kind of just have to hope it stays put until you come back. It's most likely to go home by itself later in the day in my experience.

I keep trying to see if there is a pattern to it, like X amount of time spent "inside" somewhere or maybe certain times of day like when night falls or maybe dinner time when people's locations on the map trigger a reset because they all go home for dinner, but nothing I've noticed seems consistent. So it seems to be random and uncontrollable. Which means, unavoidable ultimately. I'm hoping I'm wrong!!

Oh, is that so? I know the horse can wander around if you leave it on your farm yard, but if I dismount outside my farm, it either stays still or goes home. Either way, it's pretty tedious to look for it
I had to give allowances to my horse wandering off in my schedule before I could get the buggy because of it.
One of the most annoying parts has got to be when I bring it outside the barn to feed it and when I dismount, it just ... goes back inside the barn? >___> It doesn't always happen, but sheesh.

I've done a few circles looking for it because I did find it that way at least once. It doesn't help that my horse is white and I was using it mostly in the winter, either. I know my animals like to hide behind the barn, so I imagine the horse probably often wanders behind trees/buildings/etc as well.
