finally preordered from amazon. does anyone know in what kind of package they send 3ds games? if it's like an envelope type thing there's a chance it'll be put in my mailbox, but if it's any bigger it gets sent to the mail room that closes at 5 and won't reopen until monday and i'll just cry if it comes too late lol.

For me it usually comes in a medium sized envelope. Small enough to fit in a condo mailbox...not sure how to compare sizes to a normal mailbox ^^'
Anyway I have pre-ordered the game and....I have no idea what to expect. I have NEVER played a FE game before (well that's a lie I played the DS one but never made it past 5mins in game :/ not because I didn't like it but just I got distracted by all my other games)
Anyway I have no idea what any characters everyone keeps talking about, I'm sure there will be in game references to previous games (at least there was in that stream I saw) and I have no idea how to make children(?)/relationships happen.
Anyone got a quick rundown on how to do things? I get that you're suppose to make characters interact and assist each other in battle but other than that I'm clueless on...well everything,
Everyone keeps talking about all the children(?) that they are going to make and how to make them stronger but how/why does it matter (well streanght duh) but how do I know who to pair whom up with for the best outcomes.
As you can tell I know next to nothing about this series, should I just cancel my pre-order and wait until I've played past games (or at least the one I currently own) or will it be simple enough that I could catch on quick.
I know this game is turn base and I have played games like Final fantasy tactics and Devil Survivor, are they simular?

My best advice is to just go in and take it as it comes to you. Don't fret about stats until you get used to it or 2nd+ file, unless you really really dig that kind of stuff. Because apparently the game is heavily luck based anyway so stats I hear really don't as matter.
They have a super casual Phoenix mode that'll be sure to help you in the beginning. Is strongly recommend Hoshido first, as that's crafted more towards beginners. You don't need to play past FE games, but FE: awakening is it's closest in similarity and I'd recommend that after fates, altho it sounds like it might feel more less fleshed out compared to fates.
But don't worry about it. It is a strategy game but it's really not that hard to go through the learning curve, especially if your going to play Birthright first.
There is also quite a few gameplay videos of the game out, but obviously gotta be careful of spoilers

Yeah, don't worry about eugenics the first time through. It's really only useful in the online multiplayer, you can get by super easily in the story without it mattering.
To kind of soak your feet into it, each child has their own strengths/weaknesses/things they could use and it's really up to you to optimize them accordingly. I started out using pairings I found online but TBH it's better to do it yourself and experiment.
The kids and mothers growth rates are averaged out, so like, for example. (ignore the math under "shared children" on this page, it's been proved wrong)
Lets take Midoriko, who has 55 skill. This means when she levels up, she has a 55% chance of gaining one point of skill. Her father, Kaze, can marry Orochi who has 50 skill. Orochi!Midoriko would have about 52.5~ skill, and you could use the same math on the rest of her stats. Orochi!Midoriko wouldn't be a good build though, since Orochi is really good for kids with high magic stats and Midoriko's is 5. On a birthright run I'd personally give her Hana as a mother so her strength and skill don't get nerfed.
It gets more complicated than that but it's the basic gist of it. Like Blue Rose said, run a playthrough first for the fun of it and to figure it out, especially as your first FE. It's most fun doing that, eugenics is just kind of stressful as much as I love it. (Do what's most fun for you though, if you like a challenge maybe try but don't bite off more than you can chew.)
(If I got anything wrong, let me know! I could be wrong with my math, but I believe it was proved by an Anon and backed by others. Nothing official that I know of either way.)

Like everyone said, you don't really need to know much at all to get into the later games, so don't worry about it. In-game there are tutorials that will go over all the basics you need to know to get started.Kross lover/fan wrote:^

On that note, agreeing with Brose, if you're going to start with Fates instead of Awakening, I highly, hiiiiiighly recommend playing Birthright first. Birthright is more similar to Awakening and better for newcomers than Conquest is. After you get your feet wet with Birthright, you can do Conquest as you'll be a lot more familiar with the various systems in place.
There's a bunch of different difficulty/mode settings to use, and you can lower your mode in-game if you find it's too tough for you.
Lunatic
Hard
Normal
and then there's game modes
Classic (if a character dies, they are dead permanently. In case of story heavy characters, they retreat, but you cannot use them for the rest of the game)
Casual (If a character dies, they resurrect in the next chapter)
Phoenix (new to Fates) (If a character dies, they resurrect during their next gameplay turn)
Normal/Casual is probably a pretty good starting point imo. If you still find it too difficult, you can always lower it down to Normal/Phoenix if need be. Or if you want to just start with Normal/Phoenix that's cool too.
For characters:
Birthright characters: http://serenesforest.net/fire-emblem-fa ... haracters/
Conquest characters: http://serenesforest.net/fire-emblem-fa ... haracters/
Official website with various information: http://fireemblemfates.nintendo.com/gameplay/
Basically, for the marriage and children part of it, it's pretty simple. When in battle, if you have a character that's adjacent to one other, or if they are "paired up" (called guard stance in Fates. It's basically when you have two units fighting together, and it gives you bonuses in battle) you gain support points. When those two characters reach enough support points, they unlock support conversations.
Support conversations are conversations between characters that build up their relationships. There's 4 levels (C - B - A - S) when you get to the 4th level, S, as soon as you watch it the conversation, those characters end up getting married. After that, a paralogue will pop up and you can go and recruit their children. The children will take on both of their parents class sets, and in this particular game, their mother's hair color (except for male Kanna, the avatar's kid)
There's also a A+ support rank but those don't have conversations at the A+ rank level.
Anyways, it sounds complicated, but it really isn't. Here's an example of support conversations: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wR3-AE0MsCc what I would suggest is just go through the game in the beginning with whatever pairs you end up liking, and don't worry about the stats or inheritance or whatever.
Besides Kanna (avatar's kid) and Shigure (tied to Azura) all other kids are tied to their fathers. Flannel's kid is Velour, Xander's kid is Siegbert, etc. For Awakening the kids were tied to the mothers, so it's flip flopped for this game.
Anyways it's a lot to take in, but really, you'll be fine. There's really no way to mess up the game with all of the different modes and such, so don't stress about it. Just experiment and have a good time.

Thanks for everyone's responses. It makes a lot more since now.
I knew about the different modes and at first I thought that the phoenix mode would be too...cheat-y??? IMO. (Cheat isn't the right word but it's the only one I can think of right now) Like I said I do own one other fire elblem game but I didn't make it that far ^^' (like only to the second battle) but I'm horrible at grinding to level my characters up so right now Phoenix mode seems like a good idea right now...maybe casual mode if it gets too easy.
If this game is anything like Shin Megami Tensei games then I should be okay.
Thanks again for all the replies, I'm a little calmer now that I understand a little better on what to expect. When I tried researching on my own for info, all the info I found talked as if I should know the FE games inside and out ^^' that's why I was worried that I have to know about the past games.

Glad we could help! :D
So maybe they won't tone down Niles too much (at least his sadistic-ness) if this is anything to go by (Reina screenshots): http://imgur.com/a/53fFI

Agreeing with everything everyone else has said, Kross. Don't worry too much! Especially in Birthright, because if you think you've messed up somewhere with your units, you can always grind until it goes away lol. Also keep in mind that you can go down in difficulty level, but you can't go back up again, so I'd suggest starting off with Casual and moving down to Phoenix if you think it's too hard.
Also if anyone was curious about the differences between localization and the original:
Birthright Chapter 7:
Birthright and Conquest Chapter 6 and Conquest Chapter 7:
Not sure if there's one for Revelations yet but it's already been streamed so it might be up soon.
Also still crying over how much all the content costs (stupid Canadian prices and 13% tax) but at least Chinese New Year was yesterday and I'm still young enough to get red bags.

Also, I went into FE: A totally blind on the series aside from whatever is in SSB, so I think you'll make it lol it's kind of fun going into things not knowing a lot about it. Granted I know this game is more technical than some other ones, but like I said I was able to figure things out quickly and how they worked, so I don't think you'll need to know a ton of info to enjoy the game
@Ash: I always get mine in my mailbox in a Manila envelope if that helps

Yeah, chances are that it'll ship in an envelope and not a box. I ordered the 3DS Project Mirai DX game from Amazon and that's what it shipped in. The outer cardboard box of the game (it was a launch edition of the game) was actually slightly crushed because of it was shipped in an envelope type thing. So, it seems like if it can fit into an envelop for packaging, that's what you'll get it in. At least in my experience...KonekoChan wrote:finally preordered from amazon. does anyone know in what kind of package they send 3ds games? if it's like an envelope type thing there's a chance it'll be put in my mailbox, but if it's any bigger it gets sent to the mail room that closes at 5 and won't reopen until monday and i'll just cry if it comes too late lol.
Random Q but since I'm thinking of getting the game as well, about character permadeath, does that mean simply reaching HP0, or having HP0 at the end of a battle? If it's the former I hope OHKOs aren't that common. I've played games with permadeath before (even if story characters, resulting in game over) but it only happened if your character was attacked while in a 0HP state.

@everyone thanks. yeah i figured it'd be a manilla envelope type thing but i just wanted to make sure (weirdly enough i cant find anything on amazon about what their shipping sizes are « What The Eggplant »?) so that I know exactly what to be on the lookout for.
(fingers crossed that it comes before 5pm if they decide not to put it in my mailbox)
