[Help] New to Harvest Moon!

Okay so I am not entirely new to harvest moon but I have never really got into it hardcore, I mostly just messed around. I am posting this because I have a few questions about the game.

1 - Do I "HAVE" to befriend everyone or anyone at all?
2 - Why is the story and cut scenes timed? =.=
3 - If I choose to not befriend anyone except the marriage candidate will I miss out on anything (none story related)
4 - If I choose to befriend people down the road will I get anything from accomplishing that.
5 - If I do decided to get all the story related goals for befriending people, what are the years it is limited too(example, all story related things are between year 1-5 or 2-6 or 1-8) I mostly want to know this so I can know if I have to focus on that for the first 5 or so years so I can do that and then just enjoy what I got the game for...farming.

1. No, however you will automatically raise affection just by going to festivals and talking to people when you see them run around.

2. I don't know what you mean?

3. Not really, there are random mini cut scenes. I would suggest befriending the four rival farmers though.

4. Cut scenes, gifts for your birthday and just a good feeling.

5. There is no limit to anything. Only Eda is someone you should, if you want, befriend right away because of something I cannot spoiler.

Thank you so much this was VERY helpful, to clarify somethings though, I have read that if you don't befriend people before the end of a year or so or whatever then you can't get those cut scenes anymore like the random events or whatever. From what I am getting from you I could completely ignore everyone but the rivals and the candidate for like 5 years and then still get these events/cut scenes?

Just a note, you can speed up or skip most of the scenes in this game with the "X" button, if that's what you meant by "timed".

There is one set of three cutscenes tied to Eda that you can miss permanently, so you can ignore everyone else if you like.

I think so because you get fp for going to festivals. But if you don't talk to someone for a long period of time, they will start to lose FP

Okay thanks! I will probably still talk to people and attend events every now and then I just don't feel like talking to and giving gifts and etc. like crazy amounts in the first 2 or 3 years! Its too tedious for me!

There should be a Festival often enough to prevent affection degrading, apart from 1) the Supernatural Beings who don't attend Festivals and 2) there's a long gap at the start of each Winter where there are no Festivals at all, so you will have to make time to speak with everyone.

I have not had any problems gaining or maintaining relationships in this game due to the frequent Festivals! Plus, the Sprites, Dessie, and Witchie all live in the area I'm in a lot as I tend to my fields.

Even if you don't give gifts to anyone ever, eventually the friendship points gained from festivals and occasional chit chat will acummulate. In two or three years, everyone will be your friend. Unless you decide to ignore them completely.

the story and cutscenes aren't timed; harvest moon is a very go at your own pace game

lol befriending people isn't really that hard anyways. Just talk to people every once in a while and you're gucci. besides like Getaris said, just due to festivals and such you'll befriend everyone within a few years anyways. But you get birthday gifts from people in this game if you're friends with them sooooooooo you might want to work at it.
