Haha, now that I think about it... That would be my brother's birthday if he ever decided to play this one.

It pretty much came out of no where for me.

I'm not sure if there was some other cutscenes I missed leading up to it...? Out of the blue she's just like "Oh yeah, dude, I'm sick. Here, have my farm. Goodbye worrrrrld..."

Were there clues leading up to the fact that she was sick?

She is mentioned once you unlock all vendors.

Her three rival events led up to it (the last one was most obvious). Also, you'll notice that she's less active as the seasons pass by. She was still her usual farmer self during spring: planting crops and visiting town; but come summer, she gives up her spice field, doesn't plant on all the plots on her farm, and goes to town less. By fall, she doesn't even plant crops anymore and just stays inside her house almost all the time.

Her rival events and just plain observing her make it pretty obvious that she's I'll.

On the span of three months, she'll gradually stop caring for her farm, she'll start to complain more about her body, and then by the end she won't event come out of her house at all.
