I really want to get a cat on my farm. I have the pet house ready, and stocked up on pet food. Pretty much ready to go.

The only cats on sale is from Silk Country, and it is a brown hairy cat. I really want a black cat. Or at least a dominantly black cat. (To name it after my RL cat.) How long do I have to wait or ship, to unlock other kinds of cats? Or is it one of those deals, where you have to buy the brown cat, to unlock more? Also, do they herd smaller animals like in GrB and ToTT?

The dogs are the only pets that herd. Cats collect items for you

Um...the black cat will unlock later and you don't have to get the brown one.

The cat will bring you items. your dogs will bring your animals outside if they're trained

As stated, dogs are the only herding animals. Cats forage only. There are a total of 8 available cats. There are no straight-up pure black cats, only black and white. You can get those from Silk Country starting in Spring year 2 for a long haired black and white cat. If you want the short hair/regular coat, that's Summer year 3.

I have to wait until year 3 to get a cat?! That sucks. Doesn't bother me that the cat is black and white, though. My RL cat is black, white and ginger, but dominantly black. I always get either black cats, or black and white ones in all HM/now SOS games.

I guess having my pet house out on my farm is wasted space then, since I won't be able to fill it yet. And I don't want to get a dog, until I have a cat. Thanks for the info, guys.
