My game arrives today!!

And I'm excited. After a lengthy battle with Amazon and Chinese customs, it should be here today.
Are there any tips for the beginning of the game? Things I should do from the beginning to not end up stuck? I remember in ANB if you wanted to get the restorations done quickly you needed yams but couldn't get them in the first fall. I don't want to end up stuck for another year if there's some requirement like that.

Congrats on finally getting the game. :D
Keep 5 Turnip seeds. You need them for the seed maker

Keep 5 milk if you want a horse.
Save iron as well, you'll need them for the pichfork.
Have fun with the game

Congrats on getting the game! Not sure what you already know, so I guess I'll just go with everything I can think of...
You will need to hoard a bit, but not nearly as much as in ANB. Still, in the beginning, you should definitely hoard valuable materials, such as gems (keep the metals, though). Once you have a conquest, choose shipment earnings and sell them, and you'll basically be set to win. This works with pottery, as well, once you've unlocked it.
Also, speaking of conquests, make sure you have enough stamina left normally to take care of a field before you try and get it.
Don't forget to eat! Otherwise, it'll be hard to keep your condition, plus Raeger gives you recipes for eating at the restaurant a lot.
Become friends with Eda in your first year, and try and see all of her events in that time.
Upgrade your tools as soon as you can, and especially your hammer once you've unlocked the safari, since then you'll have a higher chance of finding the right metals for upgrades.
If you need help with Tropical and Ice Country, there are quite a few helpful guides online that show the easiest ways to meet the requirements.
Also, if want to trigger a reverse ring exchange/proposal, just keep giving presents, even if they only accept them. I'm currently stuck trying to get Raeger to trigger the ring exchange...
Each country has items it needs for the recommended shipping pretty often (in my experience), so if you sell too much and prices go down, keep the remainder and sell it the next time. For instance, Sakura Country often needs products, so I've sold most of my pottery to them.

Thanks for all the replies!
Another question: what is an easy way to make money? Bugs and dive-fishing don't seem to be earning me anything and I've only made it over 20,000 once... I'm almost at the end of spring. I thought I'd spam the grass trick like in ANB but they out smarted me there, since fodder only sells for 1 g. (And I had to buy it for 100!!)
I'm trying to save it. I'd like to get the seed maker (40,000 g) and the coop (30,000 g) so I can have some chickens, but the blueprints seem so far out of reach. Please tell me it gets a bit easier to make money... I have 2 cows and focus my time on their friendship and try to fertilize crops but sometimes have to make the choice between buying fertilizer or another bag of seeds to try to grow.
Also, where in the world can I buy treats for these animals!?

You can buy treats from Cabin Country (I think?) once you unlock it.
When diving, go under the bridge right outside of town (leading to Fritz and Georgio's farms) and search around there. A lot of people have better luck finding gems, which sell for a lot.
Also, if you catch a squid or other high-priced fish, put it in a fish hatchery and check back in a few days. There should be several more. Adding fish food helps improve the quality.
I recommend buying a sheep, and a Sewing Shed for your first building. I think the sewing shed is more useful in the beginning than the Seed Maker or other buildings. I use the Sewing Shed more than any other building. Turning wool into yarn, then yarn into dyed yarn (gold is best), then dyed yarn into cloth. It costs nothing but time (longer for gold), and is definitely worth it.
Once you get to Fall, you can unlock the Safari which will be essential for...everything. Mining will be one of the best sources of income, and if you have patience, you can save before you start mining and reload if you don't get enough valuable stuff.
Also, HORDE. EVERYTHING. Horde like you've never horded before. Even weeds, which can be made into fertilizer. You will eventually need everything. Even if you end up with an outrageous surplus of small lumber, it will help when you need to build and sell objects to unlock new vendors.
It DOES get easier. Eventually. Good luck!

Treats can be bought from Cabin Country, which is unlocked once you've shipped 100.000G to Silk Country after summer of year 1. The types of treats will be unlocked as you buy the animal types, so flipsy-flopsy treats won't be available until you've bought a rabbit.
Personally, I use the pottery studio and golden linen cloth to make money.
The pottery studio is pretty easy to get in the first year, but you will have to invest in it, since you'll need to buy dirt from Silk Country to use it. Use up the dirt on pottery with more ingredients (bottom of the list) first, then work your way up - don't mix colors in categories, though, like making 5 green cups and 3 brown cups, otherwise they'll take up too much space in your inventory or storage. Fire the pottery in the kiln in batches of 3 or so, since otherwise the kiln will get clogged up, then paint and sell it.
To make golden linen cloth, you'll need flax. Plant it on your farm and use multiplayer to level it up to 5 stars, then plant lots of it in the tall crops field and use your sewing studio to make it into golden linen cloth.
If you can, I would recommend keeping the items until one of the countries needs them, since you'll earn a bit more money.
Also, make sure to do requests, if you have the items or can cook them. You'll get more items, which you can either use or resell. (Requests with a blue background will give you blueprints, though.)

Haha yes! I've already done this!! The reward for one was 5 eggs and there was another request for 5 eggs so I figured out really quick not to sell back things before checking the request board again.
I got the treats now. I'm ready to get these cows pumping out so much milk my little farmer is swimming in it!
And I've been reading about the flax money making process today so I know what to aim for now. Ugh. Just have to get my money back up to 40,000 g now so I can buy the blueprint for the sewing studio... And buy a sheep for wool.
