I'm really loving reading all of this. I stopped playing (since my knowledge of Japanese is so low, I decided to start learning it again. I could only get the general gist of things) and have picked up SoS again to tide my cravings over. All of this information is making me so excited to play, that I want to bust it back out and just wing it.

Are there any others that only get general tidbits of Japanese, and are you really enjoying it rather than feeling like you're going through the motions? I'm really curious.

Gah. I'm just going to have to marry them all.
Another fun touch

Everyone comments when you become lovers with someone, but everyone in West Town specifically says "I heard you and Wayne got together, congratulations!" etc while the people from the other towns just mention that you have a lover now and congratulate you.
That's probably because Wayne lives in Westown XD so cute!

I don't know if it's coincidental but Lulucoco unlocked when Westown reached D Level, and Tsuyukusa unlocked as Lulucoco was about to enter D level. I think it was somewhere like Spring 14 and Summer 4 for me
Intriguing! You can raise the level by shipping products and befriends villagers, correct?
Yep, but the fastest way is by doing as many part time jobs as you can handle. Once you get to the later levels there are more specific upgrade requirements/events, I know to raise Westown to C level you help refurbish a bridge (all you have to do is gather some materials), and participating in town festivals increases it as well

I'm not even close to fluent but I'm still having a great time with it despite my limitations :D It's a great learning tool imo to look up words/kanji I don't know.

Lulukoko unlocked around Spring 15 and Tsuyukusa unlocked Summer 5 for me, so I thought it may be time based. Who knows though, my levels were about the same as yours. I'm wondering how to unlock new crops as well, there were never any additional ones in Spring for me. Finally started getting silver from the mine too, so sewing machine here I come!

I liked Hinata's introduction speaking of Tsuyukusa. He is a bit different from what I expected.

Speaking of which, I'm not sure how to phrase this, but are there any interesting tidbits about the characters that we didn't know prior from their short bios? I've learned a little about Wayne Ludeus and Ford, and my initial impressions have changed because of it, but not much about the other characters.

Hinata's really sweet, I've loved his events so far but Yuzuki was always my favorite pre-release so I want to get his events before I decide who I actually like best.

Ludus is also nice and Wayne is much better than expected, I was kind of prepared to hate him lol because his description made him sound like he'd have an inflated ego. Ford's only real sin is being terribly boring and during the cooking festival all he could talk about was nutrition and how sweets are « Puppy Doodoo » and should be judged negatively... when I won in the desserts division :p I'm sure he's some people's type though, I don't like glasses guys (they always seem to come in two flavors: nerd or snob) or the serious types so he was never in the running to begin with

Sounds neat, and actually fun. Thank you! ^^

Thank you! I'm rough on vocab though but I'm really trying to learn. I'll start playing it again soon. ^.^

Aww, Yuzuki liked the pudding I gave him, he talked about it the next day. I don't think I've seen that happen since AWL

Absolutely! I'm also not a huge fan of Ford, like Nurse Fin... But the others get more interesting the more you talk to them. Just not sure about Ford. The second Wayne event I triggered was a bit funny too. I'll put a quick summary of Hinata's intro in a spoiler in case people want to avoid it. Rough translation, may be some errors.
Spoiler:
Ginjirou is leading your around Tsuyukusa, showing off the sights and shops and introducing his daughter Komari. He brings MC over to where Hinata and Moriya are to introduce them. Hinata proceeds to call you Ginjirou's illegitimate child and says you shouldn't end up like him. He then calls you cute (like almost every other character...) then seems to realize what he said. Next statement was him blushing and saying there wasn't any deep meaning to that. Pretty cute and made me giggle when he joked around with Ginjirou.

If you don't mind me asking... What do you use to look up kanji? I want to jump right into the game when I get it in July.

I use a Kodansha Learner's dictionary, http://jisho.org to look them up using radicals as it's much quicker.

^^^ if you memorize the radicals you can use jisho.org to look up kanji by radical.

I'd actually say that provided you dont mind looking up some kanji bokumono games are decent learning tools because of all of the items. It can really expand your vocab. Ive been importing the games since ANB and it has helped a lot.
