Well, I'm personally not that good at making fast money in HM, but I found these tips on GameFAQs from a user named Zephyr_Altius:

Grow as many 3x3 squares of turnips as you can water in one day, even if thats all you get done. Befriending the villagers isn't really the most important thing to do first. You may want to begin wooing the bachelor(ette)s but otherwise you can wait until you begin mining and buy the friendship pendant to befriend everyone else. Farm, farm farm.

Protip: If you use your stylus, you can reach crops in the center of a 3x3 square. VERY useful.

Also, if you have the cash, buy the Kitchen from Chen. Cooking your crops before you ship them makes them sell for more, though less than Fogu says. I estimate its maybe a 10% increase in shipping price, which adds up. Note that you want to ship 100 of each crop uncooked to unlock the Grain crops, but once you reach that mark cook, cook, and cook.

On festival days, take advantage of time stopping to fish as much as you can. You can even bring some food (fried eggs are awesome, egg + oil) to keep going, but don't feel obligated (it gets boring).

That being said, Fall is the best time for making money early. Growing Yams is a little risky as if it rains two days in a row all of your Yam plants die (about a 1% chance of occuring), but you can make lots of cash.

For reference, my first year I made about 50,000 to 60,000 G Spring and Summer and then 150,000 G in Fall. My second year, I made about 150,000 G Spring and Summer and 550,000 G in Fall. Most of this was with a watering can with just one red and one blue wonderful, watering 2x3 at once. You can definitely do better, as I only planted 6 3x3 squares of crops in each season my first year and 20 in spring and 22 in summer and fall year 2.
